With rich dialog and an intricate plot, The 13
Hongs of Canton tells a story of love and hatred among father, sons and
brothers. Infused with the rivalry and fierce competition between Chinese and
foreign businessmen, the play reflects the turbulent social scene and ruthless
business circles of the late Qing dynasty, portraying various characters of the
era and centring on the Pan family.
The 13 Hongs of Canton is the first drama written
about the Cantonese merchants authorized to trade with foreigners in Canton in
the 19th century. These commercial agencies (hongs) formed
union and maintained personal contacts with foreign businessmen. The Chinese
society depended on them.
