Xian Xinghai (1905-1945) was one of the most outstanding Chinese musicians in the 20th century.
His life was one of assiduous study and practice, and of exertion and sacrifice to the nation. He produced throughout his short lifespan of forty years a legacy of masterpieces.
His musical compositions contain profound contemplations on the fate of China. As a people’s musician, his supreme praises to nationalist spirit, his lifting callings for national unification in wartime and his vast vision to the future of humanity, are his enduring expressions of patriotism, social undertakings, philosophy and personalities. After seventy years, the “roar” of the Yellow River still ring out loud in our ears; its “waves” still surge to our minds; we still “sing and sing effusively” in its “mighty, tenacious” rhythms in the new age when the “red sun shines over the Orient!”.
Xian Xinghai had in-depth connection with Macao. He was born in Macao, raised up in the arms of a Macao fisherwoman and flew to the world with Macao’s motherly warmth. The little city bequeathed him natural goodness and pure innocence, which, as an ultimate of beauty, blended into his mind and soul where musical notes splattered and gathered to shape his everlasting classics.
The Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region and the people in Macao cherish their tie to this great musician, and take pride in timely establishing the Xian Xinghai Memorial Museum to exhibit his exemplary life paths, spiritual merit and artistic achievements, in order to preserve cultural memory, inspire humanistic spirits, set up an honorable role-model, ameliorate the cultural ecology and facilitate the development of cultural arts in Macao.
