The Macao Cultural Centre, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents The View Finder to Asian Film 2016 (VFAF), running from October 21 to 30. The film cycle is bringing a selection of 12 screenings from over ten countries, displaying what’s new in Asia, promising to appeal to a wide variety of audiences.
This eclectic edition explores rich themes, from dark, heart-warming and passionate stories to thrilling, controversial and heart-breaking features. These include films like After the Storm, a touching and powerful story on family ties remade by Multi-award winning Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu; Palestinian feature The Idol is Mohammad Assaf’s biopic, a Gazan wedding singer who became a worldwide sensation after winning the Arab Idol contest in 2013; Dheepan, winner of the Palm d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, looks into the life of a group of Sri Lankan refugees in France; The Wailing, a critically acclaimed thriller received with applause at the this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
VFAF’s cinematic feast also includes “Faces of Pakistan”, a double bill screening the insightful documentaries A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, delving on the Pakistani human rights crisis surrounding women’s honour killings, and Song Of Lahore, both directed by two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. There will also be room for ‘guided tours’ into some of the most secretive and hard to visit countries in the world: Under the Sun, filmed in North Korea and Frame by Frame, which transports the audience to Afghanistan, are two documentaries unveiling mysteries through images secretly shot.
Besides these bright moments, on October 23 there will be a talk debating on how cinema reflects society, exploring and presenting insights on topics depicted in four edgy films included in the festival.
