The revolutionary Chinese playwright and screenwriter Xia Yan wrote this piece shortly before the Japanese Invasion of China. Amongst the dozens of plays and screenplays penned by the author, Under the Eaves of Shanghai marks a coming of age for modern Chinese drama. Though the multi-act work focuses on the War of Resistance Against Japan, this play contains no obvious references to the event. Instead, it mirrors the Chinese people’s psychology against a given cultural background and implies the arrival of a new era.
