St. Cecília Mass

Oct. 7, Sunday     Cathedral     Free admission

The music of French composer Charles François Gounod (best known for his opera Faust) is characterized by inventive melodies and complex orchestration. He composed the St. Cecilia Mass in honour of the patron saint of church music. The majestic beauty and religious force of the Mass is most stunning when performed by a full orchestra and choir in a large cathedral. The Macao performance will feature just such a perfect combination: the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Patrick Fournillier, will perform in the Cathedral. The Mass will be followed by a performance of two rare works: Ravel’s Pavane pour une Infante Défunte and Bizet’s orchestral suite L’Arlésienne.
