The “3rd Macao Printmaking Triennial”, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, was inaugurated on 4 January, at 6:30pm, at the Macao Contemporary Art Centre – Navy Yard No.1, and winning artists were also awarded. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R., Wan Sucheng; the Acting Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Lau Fong; the members of the jury, Luckana Kunavichayanont, Maurice Pasternak, Zhang Minjie and Sou Pui Kun, with the participation of winning artists and finalists and experts, creating a lively atmosphere.
The “3rd Macao Printmaking Triennial” called for submission of works from all over the world in August 2018 and received an enthusiastic response by local and foreign artists. The Triennial attracted over 1,000 entries from 39 countries and regions, including Asia, Europe, the United States and Oceania, reaching the highest record in the number of entries over the past editions. After a meticulous evaluation by the adjudging panel consisting of internationally renowned printmakers and experts, 175 winning and finalist works were selected. The Gold Prize was awarded to the work “Habitable structure” by Polish artist Łukasz Koniuszy, while the Silver and Bronze Prizes were awarded to the works “The remains of the painful thing 6” and “The way of harvester No. 2” by Thai artists Warranutchai Kajaree by Rattana Sudjarit, respectively. This year, seven Honorable Mentions were awarded to seven artists (in arbitrary order): Alberto Balletti from Italy, Bianca Cork from the United Kingdom, Chalita Tantiwitkosol from Thailand, Cao Jianhong, Li Can and Zuo Wei from Mainland China and Lee Wen-Jye from Taiwan. The works entitled “Windows encounter” and “Skyline by fifth floor (I)” by Macao artists Wong Wai I and Loi Chi Fong, respectively, were selected.
Established in 2012, the “3rd Macao Printmaking Triennial” has called for submission of works from all over the world, promoting the development of printmaking art, providing a platform for the international exchange of the art of printmaking and presenting the development of printmaking in various countries and regions. Since its establishment, it has been highly acclaimed and supported by local and foreign artists. The exhibition features a myriad of outstanding works created in various forms. Seeking innovation while adhering to artistic traditions, these works not only reflect the artists’ in-depth study of techniques, but also combine the innovative plate making, media, printing and integrated techniques. These works cover a wide range of themes, showing different artistic visions and perspectives of the artists from different cultural backgrounds, allowing the audience to appreciate the diverse aspects of printing art from all over the world and to understand the new trends and developments in contemporary printmaking.
The “3rd Macao Printmaking Triennial” runs until 17 March 2019, including on public holidays, at a number of art venues in Macao, including Macao Contemporary Art Centre – Navy Yard No.1, Tap Seac Gallery, Temporary Exhibition Gallery of The Municipal Affairs Bureau, Exhibitions Gallery and Nostalgic House of Taipa Houses. Admission is free. Guided tours will be available at the main pavilion of Macao Contemporary Art Centre – Navy Yard No.1 from 3pm to 4 pm on Sundays (from 20 January 2019 onwards) and between 5 and 7 February (the first three days of the Chinese New Year).
