In 2005, with the strong support from the central government, the “Historic Centre of Macao” was successfully inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This achievement not only showcased the unique urban landscape of Macao, blending both Eastern and Western cultures, but also significantly elevated Macao's cultural status on the international stage. Over the past two decades, Macao’s efforts in cultural heritage preservation have yielded fruitful results, and public awareness and engagement in the protection of cultural heritage have grown steadily.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the successful inscription of the “Historic Centre of Macao” on the World Heritage List, celebrating a new milestone in Macao's cultural heritage protection work and transmission. To celebrate this important occasion, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has organized a variety of broader and more inclusive events aimed at providing residents and visitors with diverse ways to engage with the Historic Centre of Macao. These include workshops featuring new ways to experience the Historic Centre, including practical workshops that will present knowledge and wisdom related to cultural relics, hands-on skill activities, and guided tours offering fresh perspectives on the Historic Centre. Special programs such as “World Heritage Walks”, “World Heritage Stamp Collection Tour”, and “Cultural Heritage Literary Landscape” will help to redefine how the Historic Centre is perceived, ensuring a vibrant and festive atmosphere. These activities will offer unforgettable encounters with Macao’s heritage, leaving lasting memories in all those who participate.
