Organized by the Macao Museum of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the exhibition “The Memorable Time – The Traditional Handicraft Industries of Macao” was inaugurated on Friday, 27 October, at 6pm, in the lobby of Macao Museum. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Assistant of the Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Education of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R., Shao Bin; the Vice President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government, Kent Ieong Chi Kin; the member of the Cultural Consultative Committee, Lok Po; the President of the Oral History Association of Macao, Lam Fat Iam; and the President of the Executive Board of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions, Leong Wai Fong. The exhibition is held from 28 October 2017 to 25 February 2018 on the third floor of the Museum.
Macao’s incense, firecracker and match industries had a prosperous period in the 1950s and 1960s, and became the important sources of income of the city at that time. They largely contributed to the local economic development and employed a vast number of local residents. This exhibition, organized by the Macao Museum, is mainly dedicated to the incense, firecracker and match industries and aims to allow the residents and tourists to reminisce the past glorious years of Macao’s handicraft industries and become aware of the evolution of society.
In order to increase the exhibition’s appeal, the organizer divided the exhibition into six zones, namely the incense industry zone, the match industry zone, the firecracker industry zone, the foreign trade zone, the education zone and simulations of the incense and firecracker factory facades, as well as the project room. The exhibition seeks to fully present to the public the development of Macao’s traditional industries by displaying 210 pieces / sets, and showing the process of development and decline of the past three greatest industries. Although these industries are now in history, they made a significant contribution to Macao’s historical development.
In addition, during the exhibition period, the organizer also holds a series of activities, including two guided tours on 5 and 19 November, two thematic talks on 11 November and 2 December, a “firecracker making” workshop on 18 November as well as four guided tours led by the exhibition’s curators to be held on 6 and 20 January and 10 and 24 February 2018.
The Macao Museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm (no admission after 5:30pm; closed on Mondays). Admission is free for holders of Macao Resident Identity Card.
