AUGUSTE BORGET (°1808-†1877)

Auguste Borget was born at Issoudun, France. In 1829, when he was twenty one, he settled in Paris to become an artist. In 1836 he embarked on a world tour and visited North America, South America, India, the coast of South China — including Macao — and the Philippines. He met Chinnery during his ten months' stay in Macao.

He his best known for his lithographs and his Sketches of China and the Chinese (published in 1842), of Chinese subjects taken from his numerous sketches drawn during his stay in Hong Kong, Macao and Guangzhou, in 1838 and 1839.

Borget returned to France in the 1840s and continued writing and painting. His works from the 'world tour' were exhibited in Paris, and many of his China sketches were engraved as books and magazine illustrations. His later years were spent in charitable work in his native Issoudun and Bourges.
