ILLUSTRIOUS WOMEN FROM MACAO

CHAN SOI FAN 陈树荣 [CHEN SHURONG](°1878-†1960)

Second wife of Sun Iat Sen. After having met Sun Iat Sen in Macao, during the period when he worked as a physician, she lived with him for more than ten years, facing many perils in her courageous collaboration towards the revolutionary cause. She returned to Macao during the last years of her life where she became a good friend of Lou Mou Cheng, Sun Iat Sen's first wife.

CHANG CHI SAI 曾枝西 [ZENG ZHIXI] (°1907-†1992)

Journalist and pioneer of the feminine cause in Macao. During the early thirties founded the Macao Women's Association for Mutual Assistance, an organization which mainly worked towards giving assistance to the female work-force of the textile industry in the Colony. In 1933, was offered the coownership of the "Tai Chong" newspaper, becoming until 1946, the Director of its Economics Section. During the Second World War became an active member of the Association for the Preservation of Four Sectors of Macao, supporting with upmost dedication and financial contributions the resistance movement against Japanese oppression.

CHEONG CHENG FAI 张晴辉 [ZHANG QINGHUI] (°1892-†1980)

A great fighter of the women's liberation movement, education, and environmental health, in Macao. In 1950, she was elected President of the Administration Board of the Kiang Wu Charity Association, and in the following year President of the Macao Women's Federation. More than thirty years of her life were dedicated to the struggle for public welfare, she became a member of the Executive Commission of National Confederation of Women and the Political Consultant Committee of the Province of Guangdong.

CHIO LIN SENG 赵连城 [ZHAO LIANCHENG]

Born in Macao. Studied in one of the most progressive schools of the colony, founded earlier this century. She was partly responsible for the establishment of the Macanese branch of the Alliance Association and founder of the Hou Kiang Reading Room - an ancillary organization of the former Association. She was an underground participant of the Heong San District rebellion of the Army and instigator of the upheavals in the Navy. In 1916, she was the co-founder with other members of the Xue Association of the "Shi Sheng" ("The Voice of Poetry") monthly periodical.

IAM KIM FAI 任剑辉 [REN JIANHUI] (°1912-†1989)

Famous actress of the Guangdong Opera. For ten years she lived in Macao, actively participating in the resistance movement against Japanese oppression. She was Vice-Director of the Guangdong Opera Section of the Association for the Preservation of Four Sectors of Macao's Recreation Department. Her artistic talents blossomed in Macao, greatly contributing towards local musical culture. In 1946 she moved to Hong Kong.

LEI SOK I 李瑞仪 [LI RUIYI](°1916-1986)

She studied in the Pui Tou Feminine Middle School, in Guangzhou. In 1940, she was awarded a Masters Degree from the Zhon Shan University, moving to Macao in 1942 and actively contributing towards the establishment of the Macanese branch of the Pui Tou School. After the Second World War she remained in the colony. In 1946, she became the Director of the Pui Tou School in Macao, a post she would keep for the following forty years. She dedicated all her life to education matters, greatly contributing towards the progress of teaching methods in the territory.

LEONG TENG WAI 梁定慧 [LIANG DINGHUI]

Also known as Leong Ko Lei. Wife of Cho Lou, Principal of Zhon Shan University. Born in Tang Jia Wan, in the District ofZhu Hai. From 1911 onwards, after China became a Republic, she energetically fought against the practice of arranged marriages. Together with some young Macanese women friends she joined the North Guangdong Expeditionary Army, being praised for her military feats. During the resistance movement against Japanese oppression she organized, in the Zhon Shan University, voluntary groups in charge of collecting funds and procuring medicaments to assist the defensive front lines.

LIO FONG KEI 廖奉基 [LIAO FENGJI](°1894-†1957)

Famous Macanese pedagogue. She moved to the colony when a child and studied in the Chi Po Middle School. She started her post-graduate studies at Lingnan School, then moving to England and being finally awarded her Masters Degree from a University in the United States of America. In 1925, she founded the U Wa Middle School, in Guangzhou. Later in 1927, she transferred to Macao. She became a leader of the school teachers and workers in the Resistance Movement against Japanese oppression. During the Second World War years she promoted in Macao the women’s motion for the liberation of the land. She died when run over by a car on the 1st of May 1957.

LOU MOU CHENG 卢慕贞 [LU MUZHAN](°1867-†1952)

First wife of Sun Iat Sen. She lived in Macao for forty years, braving numerous adversities and multiple dangers she incessantly supported her husband’s revolutionary ideals. In November 1895, following the Qing Dynasty Authorities' order of arrest against Sun Iat Sen and his family, Lou Mou Cheng and her mother-in-law fled from China taking with them the couple’s son, Sun Fo, and daughter, Sun Ian. She became a great supporter of the Resistance Movement against Japanese oppression. She was a devout Christian and an important member of the Baptist community in Macao.

SIN IOK CHENG 洗玉清 [XIAN YUQING](°1895-†1965)

Eminent professor of Literature, History and Calligraphy. Born in Macao. and a disciple of the famous pedagogue Chan Chi Po - a specialist on children and women’s education. In 1912, just before graduation, she was present at Sun Iat Sen’s speech inthe Kiang Wu Hospital Hall, in Macao. She started her post-graduate studies at Lingnan School, working in her spare time and was awarded a Masters Degree by the Sin Seng Hoi University. She resided in Macao during 1939 and 1963, researching on the history and culture of the colony's educational system.

TAM KOK CHAN 谭柜珍 [TAN JUZHEN]

Wife of the famous Chinese railway engineer, Zhan Tin You. She grew up in Macao together with her father who promised her in marriage to Zhan Tin You. The wedding took place in 1887. She was a strong advocate of her husband's enthusiasm to see China with a comprehensive railway network, going to the point of sharing his lodgings on construction sites. She was the caring mother of a harmonious family of seven children. In her old age she returned to Macao. Some of her descendants are still living in Macao.

CHIO MEI KENG 曹美琼 [CAO MEIQIANG]

Born into a Macanese family and was the favourite student of Chan Chi Po who taught her for free. In 1916, out her own pocket, she founded the Wai Tai School, the first feminine school of Macao, equally promoting free bursaries.

U MEI TAK 余美德 [YU MEIDE] (°1876-†1960)

The first Chinese physician practicing Western medicine in Macao. In 1904, needing to convalesce, she moved to Macao. In 1906, with the support of the clergy, founded in the Areia Preta(Black Sands) borough, the Chi Tou Christian temple. After opening a medical practice in Macao, she opened the first Infants School for Chinese children, in the colony. In 1932, together with her niece, U Im Mui, she helped the Chi Tou Christian temple to install the Choi Tou Middle School, achieving remarkable educational results.
