Anthology

Anthology and Archives

will regularly include two sections - Anthology and Archives, which appear fused together in this first issue under one of the titles. Before RC, many cultural periodics have been published in Macau, which included the collaboration, study and intervention of quality of writers, orientalists, and important researchers. Some of those periodicals have had an ephemeral life, but their common lineage, always re-established after each interruption, has, in time, confirmed to be the proof of the need for a place for the meeting, participation and statement of people and factors of Culture. It is, then, not by chance that the "revista de cultura" has imposed itself as a "cultural organizer" in Macau, and functionally over the larger "stature" of the book - a solitary work by authors who are not always well accompanied. Apart from the institutional vigour of the Boletim Eclesiástico (which is still being published since 1903!) magazines such as Oriente and Mosaico, those edited by the Portuguese Institute of Hong-Kong and by the Instituto Luís de Camoes, as well as the cultural supplements of Notícias de Macau, among others, were the honourable ancestors of a genealogy where RC is now rooting its filiation, to keep on with future-bound will. In those periodicals, many texts were published which, either by the actuality they have been able to maintain, or by the density and curiosity of their elements and references, do not deserve the obscurity to which time has submitted them. They shall justly find a space for re-edition here, along with such opuscule as fit the criteria of RC. In the same way, shall some documents relating to the history of Macau and the Portuguese presence in the east, never before divulged in print, be filling this Archives section. In this first issue, we have a complete transcription, keeping the original orthography and correcting it only where it looked like an evident typographic mistake, of the opuscule by José Maria Braga on the "agreement" by Leonel de Souza, which includes, as an appendix, the text of the letter sent to the Infante D. Luís.
