A summary of the main cultural activities during the quarter

The cultural events which are marked with an asterisk are dealt with more fully in the "Arts" and "News/Events" sections of this issue of RC.

JANUARY

2nd

THEATRE in Forum II. "Six Chapters of a Floating Life", a mime presented by the Hong Kong Fringe Club, was excellently interpreted by actors Philip Fok, Rita Wong and Lindsay Chan. Organized by the Leal Senado, this play had impressive results obtained by combining eastern culture with western techniques.

3rd

RECITAL in the S. Pio X Academy of Music. The Mantovano Trio with violinist Grazia Raimondi, cellist Nicolai New and pianist Mary Pond played music by Brahms.

23rd

CANTONESE THEATRE in the D. Pedro V Theatre. The Hong Kong amateur dramatic group, Exploration Theatre, performed "The Story of Mr. X." and "The Actor's Career".

24th

CONCERT in Forum II. Using instruments from both cultures, the Macau Chamber Orchestra blended eastern and western music in performances of "The Butterfly Lovers" by He Zhan-Hao and Chen Gang, a work inspired by Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and adapted by Masaaki Hayakawa and the 1st suite of Bizet's opera "Carmen".

FEBRUARY

2nd

FRENCH CINEMA in the Sir Robert Ho Tung Cultural Centre. The Alliance Française presented Ariel Zeitoun's film "Souvenirs, Souvenirs".

EXHIBITION in the Leal Senado. Mio Pang Fei exhibited twenty of his paintings revealing his artistic maturity from the introspective darkness of "Forgetfulness" to the extrovert brightness of "Search for Happiness".

8th-10th

OPERA performed by the National Opera Company of the People's Republic of China. Puccini's "Madame Butterfly" and Bizet's "Carmen" were well presented with excellent staging and lighting.

9th, 11th, 12th, 15th and 16th

CHINESE CINEMA in the D. Pedro V Theatre. Screening of "Xiao Xiao, A Girl from Hunan", "Modern Wrestlers", "N° 5, Garden Street", "The Action Mayor" and "Romance in Philately" subtitled in English.

13th and 14th

THEATRE presented by four of Macau's drama groups. The Association of Dramatic Art opened with "The Play Must Go On, Whatever", the Hoi In Association performed the play "Wall, A Thought", the Recreational and Cultural Youth Association performed "Yes? No?" and "Between War and Peace" and finally the Theatre Group of the University of East Asia presented "Where Did Grandfather Go?".

EXHIBITION in the Pavilion of Lou Lim Ieok Park. The Leal Senado organized this exhibition of traditional costumes of the ethnic minorities of the People's Republic of China.

20th

DANCES AND SONGS of the Chinese ethnic minorities organized by the Leal Senado. There were a few high spots in what was an erratic and somewhat stereotyped performance revealing a certain loss of originality although the singers' voices were magnificent.

22nd

EXHIBITION of paintings by Kwok Woon and Ung Vai Meng, confirming the fact that contemporary art is alive and well in Macau with talented artists who are increasingly gaining expertise. The message seems to have got through: the public goes to exhibitions and enjoys them thus creating the healthy habit of going to see art.

23rd

FRENCH CINEMA organized by the Alliance Française showing Pièrre Granier-Deferre's film "L'Étoile du Nord".

25th

EXHIBITION in the new wing of the Lisboa Hotel. Eduardo Tomé displayed his photographs reflecting the presence of the Portuguese in Japan from their arrival in 1543 and Macau's role in these trade relations.

MARCH

1st-5th

PORTUGUESE CINEMA in the D. Pedro V Theatre. Fernando Lopes' film "A Bee in the Rain", Luís Filipe Rocha's "The Highest Cliff", Rui Simões' "The Kind-Hearted Portuguese", "Sylvan" by João Lísar Monteiro and Monique Rutler's "Jugglery" were all screened.

1st and 22nd

FRENCH CINEMA organized by the Alliance Française. Shown were "Les Nuits de la Pleine Lune" by Eric Rohmer and Truffaut's "Le Dernier Métro".

5th

PUBLIC LECTURE in the Sir Robert Ho Tung Cultural Centre. Professor Klaus Borner spoke on fugue in Bach, Beethoven and Hindemith.

5th

MIME in Forum II. The Alliance Française organized this fine performance by the mime artist Pradel, backed by excellent sound effects.

12th and 15th

RECITALS in the Sir Robert Ho Tung Cultural Centre. Tenor José Carlos Xavier and pianist Carla Seixas gave two performances of works by Manuel de Falla, Schubert, Fuaré, Tosti and several Portuguese composers.

*19th- 22nd MAY

MACAU ARTS FESTIVAL in the D. Pedro V Theatre, the Theatre Alegria, Forum II, the University of East Asia and in the open air. Among the events were exhibitions of photography, handicrafts, painting and calligraphy, concerts of Chinese music, opera, Chinese song and theatre.

20th

EXHIBITION in the Exhibition Gallery of the Leal Senado. Portuguese ceramics from the XIXth and XXth centuries were displayed as the follow-up to an exhibition in 1985 of Chinese ceramics by the master ceramicist Lau Chin. There were free pottery workshops for children and youngsters in the Largo do Leal Senado given by the master ceramicist Lao Kwai Peng with an exhibition of the best pieces.

27th

CONCERT in Forum II. The Macau Chamber Orchestra opened its first 1988 concert season with guest performer Barbara Fei who sang works by He Luting, Hwang-Tzu and Doming Lam in addition to works by Suppé and Schubert.
