The Tiger Lillies sing Hamlet

The Macao Cultural Centre, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, is launching “The Tiger Lillies perform Hamlet”, a multimedia theatre to be staged on September 1 (Thursday) at the Grand Auditorium. The British cult band joined hands with Danish company Theatre Republique to conceive a visual adaptation of Shakespeare’s immortal tale of duplicity, murder and love, turned into a blend of circus acts, video projections and live music.

Created by the minds of theatre director Martin Tulinius and band leader Martyn Jacques, this piece re-imagines the gruesome story of a young man faced with the duty to revenge his father's death. Described as “a two-hour blast of theatrical seduction, deception and the utter futility of existence”, the play is a combination of intense acting, innovative stage design and signature sets of macabre songs illustrating the saga that leads to Hamlet’s inevitable destruction.

This tour brings The Tiger Lillies back on the international arena. This time, Martyn Jacques sings and acts to incarnate an omnipotent game master, lending his voice to a unique suite of new compositions. These tunes keep the band on the dark trail of earlier shows like the one that brought them to Macao for the first time, five years ago. Created in 2012 in Denmark, land of Hamlet, this extravagant joint venture transformed Shakespeare’s classic masterpiece into a Brechtian style, “Opera Grotesque”.

One day after the show (September 2), members of Theatre Republique will offer local actors a workshop where they will demonstrate pre-stage warm up techniques, sharing tips to improve physical and mental theatrical skills.
