FOREWORD

Luís Sá Cunha

This issue opens a second stage in the editorial life of Review of Culture, which will continue to be published in three separate language editions.

It focusses on the historical and historic relations between Japan and Portugal in commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the arrival of the Portuguese on Japanese soil.

The international recognition which our magazine received in the first years of publication served to highlight the cultural responsibilities which increase as we come ever closer to looming horizons.

With this issue, we start on a new path as regards the content of the three language editions. Until now, the Chinese and English language editions have been translations of the Portuguese original.

From now on, however, there will be more leeway to include original material in the different languages, making the contents rather more variable. We hope, by doing this, to reach a wider range of readers.

The different language editions will also be directed more specifically to certain groups of readers in an attempt to gain efficiency and exploit the magazine's commercial potential.

We shall, however, remain as constant as ever in pursuing our objective of substantiating Macau's cultural identity as part of a universal cultural encounter.
