Handover Gifts Museum of Macao exhibits lotus flower paintings by Professor Jao Tsung-I

Co-organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the Hong Kong University, the Jao Tsung-I Petite École Fan Club and the Jao Studies Foundation and held by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) and the Jao Tsung-I Petite École of the University of Hong Kong, the exhibition “The Glamour of Jao’s Lotus - Touring Exhibition of Lotus-themed Artworks by Professor Jao Tsung-I” will be inaugurated on 18 August (Friday) at 6:30pm, at the Special Exhibition Gallery of Handover Gifts Museum of Macao. This exhibition is one of the activities marking the 100th anniversary of Professor Jao Tsung-I. and is open to the general public. The catalogue of the exhibition “The Glamour of Jao’s Lotus - Touring Exhibition of Lotus-themed Artworks by Professor Jao Tsung-I” is available for sale at the price of MOP150 during the opening ceremony.

The exhibition runs until 17 September and showcases 39 sets of excellent lotus flower paintings by the Professor that bare an impressive technique.

Professor Jao Tsung-I is internationally renowned as an authority in Chinese culture. For over 70 years, he has been dedicated to the study and teaching of 13 major areas, such as ancient history, oracle bone script, silk and bamboo manuscripts, Confucian classics, rites and music studies, religious studies, studies on the book “The Songs of Chu”, history, history of relations between China and the world, studies on Dunhuang, bibliography, classic literature and China art history, etc.. The Professor has published over one hundred book and one thousand essays, opening numerous and innovative investigation fields and paths to his followers; he is deeply esteemed and widely considered as one of the most important Chinese scholars today.

Professor Jao Tsung-I advocates the “synergy between art and academia” in the art field and has dedicated many of his latest works to the lotus flower, further using his works as a starting point to develop new techniques and new paths; taking the lotus flower as the object of expression, the scholar symbolizes his constant exploration of painting as an art and his continuous vitality. Macao, one of the stops of this itinerant exhibition, has a special connection to the lotus flower. On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Professor Jao Tsung-I, the Macao Museum of Art also held  the special exhibition “Immortal Lotus” at the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao; ten years later, it pays once again homage to the scholar with this itinerant exhibition “The Glamour of Jao’s Lotus”.

The Handover Gifts Museum of Macao is located at Avenida Xian Xing Hai, NAPE, Macao, and is open daily from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 7pm, including public holidays (no admission after 6:30pm), but closed on Mondays.
