Through the gates of China's frontiers have
entered the energies of rock and pop and the harmonies of Western classical
music. They have ascended the mountains of Tibet and crossed the deserts of
Inner Mongolia, knocking on the doors of Chinese villages and spreading the good
news. Just as Solang Wangmu, Black Steed and Yirenzhizao are plugging into trends
in urban music to feed their own roots, the China Girls veil their tradition
with the sonic colours of Western classical instruments. The exotic fusion will
be immediately familiar to multicultural Macao, but not the deep roots of China
that this new popular music seeks to uncover.
