The Performing Arts Gala has been inspiring the community for years with a stream of eclectic performances. This time, the artistic galore will feature a series of troupes representing various regions, displaying their colourful treasures across three consecutive evenings. Indonesia’s Tjipta Boedaja Arts Centre will showcase Jathilan, a long-standing Javanese artistry merging dance and traditional instruments with a display of folk costumes. Visiting us from the faraway Northern steppes, Inner Mongolia’s Jangar Children’s Art Troupe will play an exotic rendition of epic chants, and from the neighbouring Hong Kong the TS Crew will bring us an alternative vision on traditional arts with a mish mash of acrobatics, lion dance, and beatboxing. Bringing us a hint of heavenly vocals, the Taiwanese Paiwanpella will interpret ancient tunes of the Paiwan, the island’s indigenous people.
Equally exciting will be the local performances, starting with the staging of a body movement and puppetry crossover, drawing on the story of Yi, a mythologic Chinese archer said to have shot down nine of 10 existing suns, while the Casa de Portugal will lyrically interpret the words penned by our own writers on the unique landscapes we have, illustrated through songs and video-projections. Besides poetry and legends, the winners of the 31st Inter-school Drama Competition are invited to restage their awarded works.
This Gala will bring us a string of delightful vignettes, letting both kids and grownups enjoy great moments together while taking part in a beautiful celebration of artistic diversity.
