The 28th MIMF is absolutely delighted to welcome Russia’s oldest symphonic ensemble. The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1882 and quickly established a reputation for insightful and discerning interpretations of both Russian and foreign works. World-famous conductors like Richard Strauss and Serge Koussevitzky guestconducted the orchestra, and were joined by the explosive firepower of world-renowned soloists like Vladimir Horowitz and the young Sergey Prokofiev. Maestro Evgeny Mravinsky took over the artistic reins in 1939, and immediately forged an artistic synergy with Dmitri Shostakovich. He is also credited with turning the orchestra into a world-class ensemble. Yuri Temirkanov, highly acclaimed conductor and recipient of numerous awards and commendations, was selected artistic director and principal conductor of the Orchestra in 1988. During his extended tenure, Maestro Temirkanov has taken the orchestra to dizzying new musical heights. His artistic achievements and award-winning recordings with the orchestra have been duly recognised around the world.

Join Maestro Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra for two extraordinary concerts celebrating the glorious music of Russia. In the first concert, entitled Russian Romanticism, immerse yourself in Tchaikovsky’s symphonic fantasy Francesca da Rimini and his near-concerto Variations on a Rococo Theme, and experience the lush lyricism of Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Symphony. Don’t miss this magnificent showcase of orchestral brilliance and instrumental colour!
