Formed in 1980 by Mark Morris with a group of friends, the Mark Morris Dance Group gave its first performance that same year and began receiving invitations to perform both in the US and in Europe. In 1988, the group was invited to become the national dance company of Belgium, where it remained for three years, performing at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. The Dance Group became one of the world’s leading companies, performing in all major international festivals. The company is now based in Brooklyn, New York, where, in 2011, it opened the Mark Morris Dance Centre, a place that serves not only as a home to the company but also as a rehearsal space for the dance community, a venue for outreach programmes for local children and a dance school.

Drawing inspiration from music, Mark Morris’s creations unroll a rhythmic space forged from the intensity and dynamics of each movement, creating a kind of precarious balance between musical line and choreography. Eleven and Double are each set to one of Mozart’s piano concertos – No. 11 in F major and No. 27 in B-flat major – and danced against a backdrop of visuals by painter
Howard Hodgkin. In Grand Duo, Morris’s tribal body language celebrates the lust for life.

“To hear Mozart through Morris’s ears is to appreciate the music in scintillating new detail.”
