Established in 1956 by Wolfgang Schneiderhan and Rudolf Baumgartner, Festival Strings Lucerne (FSL) has for decades been regarded as one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras. Known for performances of the highest quality filled with enthusiasm, the FSL owns several master instruments, which, along with a long-standing performance tradition, help define the group’s unmistakable “golden sound” (Washington Post, 2003).
Festival Strings Lucerne strives for a creative dialogue between early and new music. During the more than 50 years of FSL history, more than 100 works by such major composers as Frank Martin, Bohuslav Martinů, Sándor Veress, Iannis Xenakis, Krzysztof Penderecki, Herbert Willi, Milko Kelemen, Peter Ruzicka and Beat Furrer have been premiered by the orchestra, most of them commissioned specifically for the orchestra and its artistic directors. FSL has worked with most of today’s celebrated soloists and was awarded the ECHO Klassik 2007 award for ‘Best Concert Recording’. The orchestra’s CD productions have confirmed its outstanding reputation as a world-class ensemble with compelling programming.
