Originating in Southern China, Cantonese opera – also known as “grand opera” to the local Cantonese population – is a mesmerising performing art, which integrates music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics and acting plus wondrously colourful and symbolic costumes and make-up. Initially, the dialogues and sung numbers were performed in official Mandarin Chinese, but by the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), a number of intellectuals in the region had begun to translate the operatic works into Cantonese, to popularise the revolutionary ideas they contained among the local people. Last year, Cantonese Opera was officially inscribed on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In celebration of this fact, prominent Cantonese Opera performers from Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao join together, bringing The Red Silk Romance to the Macao Cultural Centre stage.
The much loved work tells an amusing tale about two pairs of lovers facing the grim prospect of arranged marriages to the wrong partner. Cheong Chao Yan is in love with Cheong Lao Ut, a maiden unhappily betrothed to Sit Chun Lam, who has fallen in love with his fiancée’s sister Cheong Lao Fa. What follows are the trials and tribulations of four young people, in their struggle against tradition and on their quest for true love.
