Yu is the abbreviated designation for Henan province in China. Yu Opera, which emerged in the 17th century, and is also known as Bangzi of Henan, is the most representative of local operas and one of the most popular genres in the country.

The action of this famous Yu Opera occurs during the Spring and Autumn period (722BC–481BC). Disloyal minister Tu Angu kills Zhao, a good and loyal colleague and murders his whole family, in a massacre of more than three hundred people. Fortunately, Zhao’s wife manages to give birth to a boy before dying. Guided by Cheng Ying, a group of devoted people experience great hardship and danger to save the little orphan from the evil hands of Tu Angu in a fight between good and evil where justice prevails. This is a classic of Chinese opera literature staged by the renowned Henan Yu Opera Troupe.
