Dvorák’s Requiem mass has its origins in the British oratorio tradition. It was written for the 1891 Birmingham Festival and it was an international success in the Czech composer’s time, but performances of it have become rather rare. The Requiem has high moments, as we would expect from Dvorák - a master lyricist. Its setting may not abound in grand dramatic effects but the composer's sensitive response to the text reveals a profound awareness of the mysteries of human existence.

Francesc Bonnín is Music and Artistic Director of the Fundació Teatre Principal de Palma in Spain. He has worked several times in China with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Chinese National Opera and the Beijing Symphonic Choir in opera productions and conducted Rossini’s Stabat Matter in 16th Macao International Music Festival.
