Ruggero Leoncavallo was an exponent of the
verismo movement in Italian opera. His masterwork I Pagliacci is
often performed in a double bill with Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana.
l Pagliacci is said to be based on a real-life tragedy, and has a brilliant
Italian flavour and intriguing storyline. Cavalleria Rusticana, a story
about love and revenge in a Sicilian village, brought instant fame to its
composer.
