From Tongue to Pen—Macao Writers’ Food Memories

To adhere to the development direction of consolidating Macao as "a hub of exchange and co-operation where traditional Chinese culture prevails and other cultures flourish in harmony", the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government and the China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Corporation have jointly organized the 2nd Encounter in Macao—Arts and Cultural Festival between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries: Macao International Book Fair 2019. During the book fair, an array of events, including talks delivered by writers, book launches, seminars on China–PSC publishing culture and cookbook publisher salons, will be held to promote in-depth cooperation regarding copyright trading and publishing among Portuguese-speaking countries, countries along the "Belt and Road" route and China, with the ultimate goals to invigorate the book publishing market and stimulate cultural development in Macao. Content: It is all about nostalgia for hometown food, memories over dining tables, and moments in the past... Famous Macao writers Tong Mui Siu, Yao Feng, and Wong Cheng Pou, will talk about the food culture of Macao, share their stories, and recall the unforgettable tastes.

Yao Feng
Yao Feng, pen name of Yao Jing Ming, is a professor of the Department of Portuguese in the University of Macau. He has poetry anthologies in both Chinese and Portuguese, including Writing on the Wings of the Wind, Enemies on the Deadwood, A Noite Deita-se Comigo, Lemons in the Sea, Solo in the Chorus, among others. His has more than ten of translation works, including Anthology of Modern Portuguese Poetry, Antologia de Poetas de Macau, Uma Antologia de Eugénio de Andrade, and O Barco Remenda o Mar-Dez Poetas Chineses Contemporâneos. He was the winner of “Rougang Poetry Award”  and “Ordem Militar de Sant’lago da Espada” medal by the President of Portugal.

 

Tong Mui Siu
Tong Mui Siu, also known by her pen name Lam Chong Ying, is a member of the China Writers Association and Chairman of the Pen of Macau. Her books published in Macao, Hong Kong, and mainland China include prose collections How Many Times Can We Laugh Heartily in Our Life, and Hazy Gaze, children’s story collection The Tree of Love, novella collections Cloud and Moon and One to One (compilations), and literary critique collection Recounts of Macao, among others.

 

Wong Cheng Pou
Wong Cheng Pou, a senior artist and curator of many important art exhibitions, was born and brought up in Macao. In 1993, he was invited to be an honorary research assistant in Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. He likes writing about life experience of his own and has two prose collections published, namely, Idler on Probation and Once Upon a Time. For a long time, he used to write, with pictures, on culinary delights for the popular newspaper column “Private Kitchen” in Macao Daily News.
