Summary

This research survey comprehensively examines the emergence of the American community in Macao and demonstrates that the British and American trade in Asia were financially interconnected and structurally linked together. The Cushing mission to Macao therefore should not be interpreted as Washington’s counterweight to British economic expansion in Asia. From a Macao perspective, this study enhances our understanding of Sino-American relations during the formative years.
