AN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY CHINESE SOURCE FOR THE PORTUGUESE DIALECT OF MACAO

C. R. Bawden*

[INTRODUCTION]

The appeal of the Sino-Portuguese Vocabulary which is to be studied in the present article will be to antiquarian rather than to scientific interest. It is not to be expected that the study of a random collection of Portuguese words with their Chinese equivalents, made privately in Guangdong• ** in the eighteenth century, will yeld substantial results; it is probably the earliest record of the type of Indo-Portuguese spoken in Macao. It antedates by a hundred years, for instance, the texts printed by F. Adolpho Coelho in his article Os Dialectos Romanicos ou Neo Latinos na Africa, Asia e America, the earliest of which appears to be the letter which Coelho reprints from the Macao Journal "Ta-Ssi Yang-Kuo" of 1865. 1 The Vocabulary has the additional interest that it preserves, to some extent accurately, the contemporary pronounciation of the dialect of Macao.

Chinese interest in the languages of foreign peoples dates from an early epoch, and the series of vocabularies compiled at the Siyi Guan• (The House of the Four Foreigners) and Huitong guan• (The Assembly Hall) are too well known to need rehearsal here. These vocabulariers were at first concerned exclusively with Asiatic languages. It was not until the middle of the eighteenth century that there was produced an edition of the Huayi Yiyu• (Chinese - Foreign Languages Dictionary) containing vocabularies in English, French, German, Italian, Latin and Portuguese, as well as in the oriental languages which are regularly met with in this type of official handbook. Dr. W. Fuchs who has described this edition of the Huayi Yiyu suggests that it probably dates from 1748. 2 If this is so it is practically contemporaneous with the Vocabulary with which we are concerned, which may antedate it by only a year or so. This Vocabulary is contained in the Aomen Jilue• (Monograph of Macao), the fullest account of Macao which we possess from a Chinese pen. This book was first published in or soon after 1751 and was reprinted from newly bocks in 1800. Reprints of this later edition were made on several occasions during the nineteenth century, 3 and parts of the text, including the Vocabulary, were reprinted together with other texts concerning Macao in the geographical collection Xiaofanghu Yudi Congchao• The Aomen Jilue was the work of two Chinese officials, Yin Guangren• and Zhang Rulin• (° 1709-†1769). According to his Postface to Aomen Jilue, Yin was appointed in 1743 to the Chinese guard-post of Qianshan• near Macao, as Tongzhi• (Sub-prefect), with the duty of supervising the troops there. He was first to hold this post, which had just been created, and it seems that in spite of the regular intercourse between Chinese and Portuguese for nearly two hundred years, not much was known officially about the Portuguese in Macao, for Yin writes that, as he was without talent, and the affair was in its infancy, he travelled about among the local Chinese making enquiries, and collecting what written records he could find. All the information which he acquired he recorded and collated. By 1746 the draft of his work, the Aomen Jilue, was ready and he showed it to his colleague Chang Ju Lin who in the same year succeded him in his sub-prefecture. Chang brought the manuscript into shape, making many additions and delections, but the manuscript went astray owing to the illness and subsequent death of one Xu Hongquan• to whom it had been entrusted. It lay about in a chest for fiveyears and then appeared with a Preface by Zhang Rulin, dated 1571.

It was not until the nineteenth century that relations with the foreigners who approached China from the southern coast began to assume a greater importance than that which had always attached to the barbarians who pressed upon China from the landward frontiers. The Portuguese raders at Macao were only a minor irritant compared with the everpresent danger of invasion from Mongolia, a danger which did not disappear with the Yuan• dynasty, but which threatened China from time to time under the Ming, and was only finally disposed of when another successfull invasion from the landward side, that of the Manchus, had taken place. It is not surprising therefore to find that the presence of the Portuguese is generally speaking treated as a local problem, to be dealt with by minor officials, whose policy was to contain the foreigners within a certain easily delimited area. Thus we find that as early as 1574 a barrier, known to the Chinese as Guanzha,• and to the Portuguese as Porta do Cerco [Barrier Gate, or Border Gate], was constructed across the lianhuajing• (lotus stalk) peninsula which connected the mainland and the Portuguese settlement, and an official was appointed to guard it, in view of the daily comings and goings of the barbarians [foreigners]. 5 At first the Barrier was opened six times a month, and later every day, for the Chinese to buy fresh provisions. 6Only gradually did the Chinese institute measures of supervision on a larger scale, and always with the object or regulating the relations of the foreigners [barbarians] and the local population. In 1621 a military guard post was established at Qianshan, some fifteen li• west of the Barrier, under the command of an officer of the rank of Canjiang• (Lieutenant Colonel), and in 1664 the command was raised to that of a Fujiang• (Colonel). In 1730 or 1731 a determined effort was made to assert Chinese civil and judicial authority at Macao, and a Xiancheng• (Assistant Distric Magistrate), was detached to Qianshan, known to the Portuguese from the white walls of Yamen,• as [Port.:] Casa Branca [White House or "Qianshan military post"], to regulate those affairs in which Chinese and foreigners were concerned. 7 In 1743 or 1744 a Haifang Tongzhi Shu• (Coast Defense Prefecture), was established at Qianshan, inside the military post, and the magistrate moved to [Wang Xia]• village on the Portuguese side of the Barrier and the town walls. 8 It was probably to this office that Yin guangren was appointed in 1743, and it was in his official capacity that he was able to compile the information about the Portuguese who is preserved in the Aomen Jilue.

The Aomen Jilue, in two volumes, each prefaced by a number of illustrations, consists of three sections. The first, Xingshi Pian• (Location) describes the geographical situation of Macao and gives information about tides and winds. It incorporates earlier descriptive texts concerning the area, such as the Aomen ji• (About Macau) and Humen ji• (About Humen) of Xue wen. • The second section, the Guanshou pian• (Stage Defense) traces the history of various official posts established to supervise the Portuguese since 1574. The third section, the Ao Fan Pian• (Macao Foreigners) gives a detailed description of the topography of Macao and of the appearance, clothes, food and habits of the inhabitants, both white and black, and lists and describes the various commodities in which they traded. At the end of this section is the Sino-Portuguese Vocabulary, consisting of three hundred and ninety five words and short phrases in Chinese with Portuguese equivalents in Chinese transcription, with which we are concerned. The Vocabulary is divided into five sections under the headings Tiandi Lei• (Heaven and Earth), Renwu Lei• (Men and Things), Yishi Lei• (Clothing and Food or Attire), Qi Shu Lei• (Implements and Numbers or Instruments), and Tongyong Lei• (Common Expressions or Words of Everyday Usage). This arrangement, in a more or less extended form, is standard for Chinese vocabularies of foreign languages.

Until recently, the existence of this Vocabulary has not been noticed. B. Laufer notes in his article Sino-lranica9 that some of the names of commodities of trade mentioned in the text of Aomen Jilue are given in Portuguese and not in Chinese, and he quotes two, as follows: 巴爾酥麻香 pa erh su ma hsiang [ba er su ma xiang], a kind of benjoin, is the Portuguese balsamo [bálsamo], and 把雜 pa tsa erh [ba za], bezoar, is the Portuguese bazar, bazoar, bezoar. (The common Chinese expression for this is 牛黃 niu huang [niuhuang]). But the full text of the Aomen Jilue was first translated into Portuguese by Luís Gonzaga Gomes and published in Macao in 1950, 10 and in this translation the Vocabulary is reproduced and transliterated into Guangdongnese pronounciation. Gomes also reconstructs the majority of the Portuguese words; however his reconstructions are not always accurate, being sometimes a mere paraphrase of the Chinese headings, and there are a number of gaps in his list. I hope therefore that my own list of the reconstructed Portuguese words, while itself not complete, may prove, with the remarks in it, still to be of some interest, especially as Gomes does not give any notes to his list.

The dialect pronounciation used by the compiler of the Vocabulary seems generally, but not exclusively, to have been Guangdongnese. As neither authors of the Aomen Jilue was a Guangdongnese, Yin [Guangren] being a native of Baoshan• in Jiangsu, • and Zhang a native of Huangshang• in Anhei,• this fact points to a third, anonymous contributor to the book, who was probably himself a Guangdonese. It also underlines the unofficial nature of the Vocabulary, which seems to owe more to the model of the unofficial Japanese Vocabulary Jih Pen Ch'i Yü•11 (Uncommon Japanese Words) which dates from the Ming dynasty, and which is mentioned by name in the short introduction to our Vocabulary, than to the official vocabularies produced by the two Bureaux, which generally were much longer than those two private compilations. The very rough equivalenmts which the characters used for transcription often offer for the original sounds make it difficult to make a definite decision as to the dialect pronunciation used, but a number of cases can be instanced which clearly point to the use of Guangdongnese. Thus the Portuguese homem is figured much more accurately if we assume the Guangdongnese pronunciation12 of the characters use 可微 and read hoh mei than if we read, for example, Mandarin k'o wei [kewei]. Similarly the transcription 亞內的 represents the Portuguese a noite [English: (the) night] more closely if read as Guangdongnese a noi ti than if it is read as Mandarin ya nei ti [yaneide]. The clearest indication is given by the use in the initial position of the character 孖 which, in Guangdongnese has the pronounciation 'ma' and in Mandarin has the pronounciation 'tzu'. Thus the words 孖喇,孖度, represent ma la (Portuguese: mar [English: sea]) and ma to (Portuguese: monte [English: mountain - in the Vocabulary also listed under Portuguese: "subir monte" (?); English: "go uphill"]) respectively. There are however equaly clear indication that the Mandarin pronounciation of a character is sometimes to be assumed. Thus the transcription 尾虐 represents the Portuguese vinho [English: wine] only if read it as Mandarin wei nioh [weinue] and not as Guangdongnese mei yeuk. Similarly in the transcription 崩巴而大 for [Port.:] bombarda [English: bombard - In the Vocabulary listed as "cannon"], it is obvious that the Mandarin pronounciation 'erh' [er] of the character 而 was intended, and not Guangdongnese 'i'.

The process of reconstruction is further complicated by actual mistakes in the transcriptions. The compilar of the Vocabulary has in certain places misheard the Portuguese sounds. In case where the identification of the word concerned is in no doubt, as in the lists of numbers and the names of the months, these mistakes can be controlled.

Thus it is evident that something is amiss in the transcription 糯占補爐, noh tsim po lo [nuozhanbulu], for [Port.:] novembro [English: november]. The second character 'tsim' [zhan] has been mistakenly used under the influence of the correctly transcribed [Port.:] dezembro [English: december] which follows. In any case, a separate list, to be found in the body of the text, transcribes these names correctly (though quite differently) and uses the character [文], man [wen] for the second syllable of [Port.:] novembro, and [生], shuang [sheng] for the second syllable of dezembro. Mistakes of this sort are most probably due to simple errors of copying which easily persist, as the transcriptions, once written down, make no sense to a Chinese reader. 13 In another class stand those characters occasionaly used to represent a sound different from that which they normally bear in Mandarin or Guangdongnese, but which in colloquial speech may easily be confused with that sound. Thus, Mandarin: [利] li [li], Guangdongnese: lei, while used as would be expected to transcribe words containing 'l' and 'r' sounds (which the Vocabulary does not distinguish), e. g. [利盲] lei maang [limang], [Port.:] limão [English: lemon], [的忌利] ti kei lei [dejili], [Port.:] tigre [English: tiger], is also used on occasions to represent what is a 'd' sound; e. g. [利時] lei chi [lishi], [Port.:] dez [English: ten], and the first syllable ofdezembro. A similar confusion between '1' and 'd' occurs with the character [里], li [li], lei, used both in [亞里古當] a lei koo tong [yaligudang], [Port.:]algodão [English: cotton], and in [里亞] lei a [liya], [Port.:] dia [English: day - in the Vocabulary listed under Portuguese: "meio dia" and "ésse dia" [sic]; respectively in English: "midday" and "today"]. Further examples are the use of the character [爹] te [die] to figure the initial syllables of both [Port.:] dedo [English: finger] and [Port.:]nervo [English: nerve, muscle - in the Vocabulary listed as "sinew"]; and, which is more difficult to understand, the use of [度] [du] to figure the final sound of [Port.:] armário [English: wardrobe - in the Vocabulary listed as "cupboard"] and [Port.:] magro [English: thin].

Of the three hundred and ninety five words and short phrases listed in the Vocabulary, about three hundred and seventy can be really retranscribed into Portuguese. Certain peculiarities both of gramnmar and of the actual words listed make it certain that the language represented in this list is the Indo-Portuguese dialect current in Macao, and that it was taken down from speech, and not compiled from written material. Indo-Portuguese became at a very early date the lingua franca for communication between Europeans and Asians for purposes of diplomacy, trade and missionary work. Thus as early as 1545, in a letter quoted by Lopes, 14 St. Francis Xavier wrote from S. Tomé de Meliapor to the Colégio de Santa Fé [sic] [College of the Holy Faith] in Goa: "If there come any foreigners in our Company [Society of Jesus] who cannot speak Portuguese, it is necessary that they learn it, for otherwise there cannot be had any interpreters capable of understanding them." This Indo-Portuguese had time to acquire its own grammatical system, together with a large number of new words borrowed from oriental languages, and a somewhat modified pronounciation. It was this modified sort of Portuguese which was carried to Macao; it is remarkable that our Vocabulary lists hardly any words borrowed from Chinese, the language before it found its way to Macao. This Indo-Portuguese language itself developed a number of distinct regional forms, of which the Macanese dialect formed one. To what extent this dialect was already distinct at the time at which our Vocabulary was compiled cannot be judged with any certainty from the insufficient evidence of the Vocabulary itself.

The language of the Vocabulary is differentiated frm metropolitain Portuguese by the following characteristics:

[§1.]I CHOICE OF WORDS

Many of the names of objects listed in the Vocabulary are local names, and not equivalent in metropolitain Portuguese of the Chinese heading. For example, a [Indo-Portuguese] word jurubaça15 is given under the heading [通事] t'ung shih [tongshi], [English: interpreter], instead of the usual Portuguese word, interprete [sic] [intérprete]. Similarly there are a number of entries where the Portuguese word is the name of a local product, rather than that of the object usually associated with the Chinese name. Thus, under the heading [糖] t'ang [tang], [English: sugar], we find the equivalent [Indo-Portuguese:] jagra, jaggery [ - as in the Vocabulary], a kind of coarse black palm sugar much used in Asia; under the heading [葡萄] p'u t'ao [putao] [English: grape - as in the Vocabulary], we find the word [Macanese:] jambolão, the Java apple, a fruit from which wine is made.

[§2.] II PRONOUNCIATION

In spite of the innacuracies and lack of consistency of the transcriptions, it is possible to recognise certain peculiarities of pronounciation which serve to characterise the dialect of this Vocabulary:

[2.1.] i) The nasal diphtong 'ão' is not distinguished from the simple nasal vowel 'ã'. Thus the character [孟] maang [meng] is used to represent the final sound of both [Port.:] mão [English: hand] and [Port.:] irmã [English: sister]. One must of course allow for the difficulty of representing such alight variations of sound in Chinese transcription, but it is work remarking that Leite de Vasconcellos16 says that the sound 'ão' becomes ' ã ' in the dialect of Macao.

[2.2.] ii) The consonant 'ch' has the sound 'tch' rather than modern Portuguese 'sh'. In this connection we may remark that the pronounciation 'sh' is first mentioned in 1671 in connection with metropolitan Portuguese, and was in 1739 still regarded as peculiar to Lisbon. 17 Thus it is the older value 'tch' which is attested in our Vocabulary, and which maintained itself there, and also in the Portuguese dialect of Singapore. Examples of this sound are: [租華] tso wa [zuhua], [Port.:] chuva [English: rain - in the Vocabulary also listed under Portuguese: "pequenino chuva" [sic] and "chuva grande", respectively in English: "drizzle" and "heavy rain"] and [扎包] chaap paau [zhabao], [Port.:] chapéu [English: hat].

[2.3.] iii) The liquid sound 'lh' which Leite de Vasconcellos says is pronounced as 'l' in the dialect of Macao appears to have undergone this change by the time our Vocabulary was compiled, for we have such forms as [威盧] wai lo [weilu], [Port.:] velho [English: old-in the Vocabulary also listed under Portuguese: "gente velho" [sic]; in English: "old people], and [阿盧] oh lo [alu], [Port.:] olho [English: eye]. On the other hand the liquid 'nh' has maintained itself, with such words [冠也打] koon ya ta [guanyeda], [Port.:] cunhada [English: sister-in-law], but it is difficult to decide if the transcription [官呀] koon a [guanya], [Port.:]unha [English: nail - in the Vocabulary listed as "fingernail"] shows the liquid sound or not.

[2.4.] iv) The medial 'v ' has already been lost in the [Portuguese] word chuva [English: rain], transcribed as [租華] tso wa [zuhua]. This peculiarity is mentioned by Leite de Vasconcellos. In other words the 'v' has maintained itself, e. g., [哥皮] kok p'ei [gepi], [Port.:] couve [English: cabbage - in the Vocabulary listed as "coarse mustard"].

[2.5.] v) The loss of the final 'r' from the infinitive form of the verb, noted by Leite de Vasconcellos, is probably attested by such forms as [做喇] tsô la [zuola], [Port.:] chorar [English: (to) weep], or [哩] lei [li], [Port.:] rir [English: (to) laugh], but it is of course not certain that the infinitive of the verb is intended.

[2.6.] vi) Certain sounds have been simplified. The Vocabulary gives the transcriptions [擺] paai [bai], and [買] maai [mai] for Portuguese pai [English: father] and mãe [English: mother]. A Macanese version of the Ten Commandments quoted by Coelho18also writes pai, mai, and it seems that these words are both to be taken as having simple (and not nasal) dipththongs in our Vocabulary.

[§3.] III GRAMMAR

Very little evidence of grammatical characteristics can be deduced from a list of works. The following however be noted:

[3.1.] i) Lack of agreement between adjctive a feminine noun;'19e.g. [Port.:] Casa Branco [Casa (feminine) Branco (masculine)] [English: White House - in the Vocabulary listed as "Ts'in Shan military post"], mostarda branco [ mostarda (feminine) branco (masculine)] [English: white mustard - in the Vocabulary listed as "Chinese cabbage"], must be reconstructed from the transcriptions (the last character in each case being [古] koo [gu] ) though normally one would expect [Port.] branca [feminine].

[3.2.] ii) Absence of the definitive article. This is to be clearly seen in the entry [Port.:] abrir (a) porta [English: open (the) door] and in the following entries in the appended list. The appropriate articles have been suggested in parenthesis). Leite de Vasconcellos suggests that there is no definite article in the Portuguese of Macao [Macanese dialect].

[3.3.] iii) The use of the adverb plus what Coelho calls "[...] the fundamental form of the verb […]" to form the past tense; e. g. [Port.:] já olha [correct Port.: olhou; literal English: already looks], [English:] have seen [- as in the Vocabulary], saw. 20

The Vocabulary of Aomen Jilue, then, offers evidence of the existence at Macao in the middle of the eighteenth century of an Indo-Portuguese dialect, which if not already distinct from other oriental dialects of Portuguese at least shows certain characteristics of the Macanese dialect described by writers in the later half of the nineteenth century (Coelho and Leite de Vasconcellos). The attempt to reconstruct meets many difficulties. In addition to actual mistakes, the use of one and the same character to represent quite different sounds(e.g. 孖 ma [ma] for both 'ma' of [Port.:] mar and 'ba' of [Port.:] tabaco [English: tobacco], or [盧] lo [lu] for the last syllables of [Port.:] sogro [English: father-in-law], [Port.] companheira [English: female companion - listed in the Vocabulary as "mistress"], and [Port.:] mulher [English: wife - listed in the Vocabulary as "woman"]) means that one can only reconstruct the original word if one knows already what word is meant. That is, one cannot proceeed with a logicasl systematic reconstruction. Many of the words are obscure Indo-Portuguese words, not all of which are listed in Dalgado's dictonary. But the Vocabulary is clear in sufficient detail to show the individual nature of the dialect concerned.

◆ Words which do not correspond to the respective contemporary meaning/s of either or both C. R. Bawden's and Luís Gonzaga Gomes' given word/s in Portuguese

◎ Words listed in Huang Hongzhao's article (pp. 67-84) in this issue.

★ Words listed in Zhang Wenqin's article (pp. 85-110) in this issue, as appearing in both the Ao Yi and the Riben Jiyu.

☆ Words listed in Zhang Wenqin's article (pp. 85-110) in this issue, similarly shared by the Ao Yi and the Riben Jiyu.

**Revised version of: BAWDEN, C. R., An Eighteenth Century Chinese Source for the Portuguese Dialect oƒ Macao, in Silver Jubilee volume of the Zinbum-Kagaku-Kenkyusy, Kyoto University, 1954.

Editor's note: Entries in this text and Notes have been standardized in order to comply with those in the articles by Huang Hongzhao and Zhang Weiqin in this issue.

NOTES

** Editor's note: Whenever possible in the original text, Chinese entities, names, geographical locations and sites were transliterated to pinyin, except in examples directly related to "sound reconstructions" where the romanisation Vocabulary used by the author in the original edition was maintained. In these examples the pinyin provided in between flat brackets is for reference purposes only.

*** Luís Gonzaga Gomes reconstructed Portuguese listing (5.) contains only the entries which are NOT the same as in the author's reconstructed Portuguese listing (4.).

1 COELHO, F. Adolpho, Os Dialectos Romanicos ou Neo Latinos na Africa, Asia e America, in "Boletim da Sociedade de Geographia de Lisboa", Lisboa, ser. 2, 1880, part. 1, pp. 167-171.

There were two journals called "Ta-Ssi Yang-Kuo"; the second of these was published in Lisbon at the end of the last century ["Ta-Ssi-Yang-Kuo 《大西洋國》 Semanario Macaense d'interesses publicos locais, literário e noticioso", Macau, anno [year] 1, quinta-feira [Thursday] 8 de Outubro [October] de 1863, No. 1 / anno 3, quinta-feira 26 de Abril [April] de 1866, No. 30; "Ta-Ssi-Yang-Kuo 《咫西洋國》Archivos e Annaes do Extremo-Oriente Português: coligidos, coordenados e annotados [compiled, coordinated and anotated by] / por / J. F. Marques Pereira", ser. I, vols. 1-2 + ser. II, vols. 3-4, Lisboa, Antiga Casa Bertrand- José Bastos, Livreiro Editor, 1899-1900 - reprint: Macau, Direcção dos Serviços de Educação e Juventude - Fundação Macau, 1995, 3 vols.].

2 "Bulletin of the Catholic University of Peking", Peking (8) 1931.

It is interesting to note the linguistic work which was being done at this time on the European side, mostly by Catholic missionaries.

See: LOPES, David, A Expansão da Língua Portuguesa no Oriente durante os Séculos XVI, XVIII, e XVIII, Barcelos, 1936 - [The author] lists twenty Vocabularies and Grammars of Oriental languages compiled in Portuguese between 1595 and 1785.

3 BOXER, Charles Ralph, Fidalgos in the Far East, The Hague, 1950, p.284 - For a biographical account of the Aomen Jilue.

4 Biographies of both in Kuo Ch 'ao Hsien Lei Cheng 《國朝耆獻類徵》.

5 Aomen Jilue, part. 1, p. 23 vo. [See: TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] -IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., Ou-Mun Kei-Leok: Monograƒia de Macau (Monograph of Macao), (Edição da Quinzena de Macau [...], Lisboa) Macau, [Leal Senado]Tipografia Martinho, 1979, [1st edition: 1950] The generally accepted date in 1573.

6 CHANG Chen T'ao 張甄陶 (°1693-†1780) Aomen Tushuo 《澳門圖說》 reprinted in Hsien Fang Hu Chai Yü Ts'ung Ch'ao, IX, vol. 4.

7 Yin Guangren's Postface to Aomen Jilue, part. 1, pp. 27vo- 28ro [See: TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., Ou-Mun Kei-Leok: Monografia de Macau (Monograph of Macao), (Edição da Quinzena de Macau [...], Lisboa) Macau, [Leal Senado] Tipografia Martinho, 1979, [1st edition: 1950] - gives the date as 1731 and says that the reason for the changes was that the number of Portuguese and Chinese at Macao was daily increasing, and they were too far from the District authorities at Hongshan.

8 Aomen Jilue, part. 1, pp. 2ro, 28ro [See: TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren],GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., Ou-Mun Kei-Leok:Monografia de Macau (Monograph of Macao), (Edição da Quinzena de Macau [...], Lisboa) Macau, [Leal Senado]Tipografia Martinho, 1979, p. 17 [1st edition: Macau,Imprensa Nacional, 1950]. This date is given in both places as 1744, but this is doutless the subprefecture mentioned in the Postface [p. 281]as having been set up in 1743.

9 Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago 1919, pp. 434,521.

10 GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., Ou Mun Kei Leok. Monografia de Macau de Tcheong-U-Lam e lam-Kuong-Iam, traduzido do chinês para português, 2 vols., Macau, Imprensa Nacional, 1950 [See: TCHEONG-U-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., Ou-Mun Kei-Leok: Monografia de Macau (Monograph of Macao), (Edição da Quinzena de Macau [...], Lisboa) Macau, [Leal Senado] Tipografia Martinho, 1979 - reprint] - My attention was drawn to this work by professor Charles Ralph Boxer while I was working on this Vocabulary. I wish to acknowledge the kindness of Professor Boxer in allowing me to use his copy of Gomes' book, which is even less easy to find than the original Chinese text.

11 EDKINS - SATOW, Jih Pen Ch'i Yü 《咫本奇語》,in "Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan", vol. 10,1882; PELLIOT, Paul, Jih Pen Ch'i Yü 《咫本奇語》, in "T'oung Pao", (38) 1948, p.289 - The authors classes this as an "independant vocabulary", i. e., an unofficial one, not emanating from either of the Bureaux.

12 WONG, S. L., A Chinese Sillabary Pronounced According to the Dialect of Canton, Shanghai, 1941 - For a check of Cantonese [Guangdongnese] pronounciations.

Unless otherwise stated the Cantonese pronounciation of Chinese characters has been used in the retranscription of the Portuguese words quoted in this article.

13 Thus the [Port.:] word 'camarão' [English: shrimp] correctly written in the original print as [監巴朗] in rendered is rendered unrecognizable in the reprint in Hsiao Fang Hu Chai Yü Ti Ts'ung Ch'ao by the substitutuion of [藍] laam [lan], for [監] kaam [jian].That this criticism in valid was demonstrated by an examination of a manuscript copy of the Aomen Jilue kept at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, which reveal numerous variant writings of chartacters in the vocabulary, a large number of which were mistakes for characters which appear correctly in the printed edition. Yet even here errors occur, such as the use of [汲] kap [ji] for [波] poh [bo] in the [Portuguese] entry'poço'.

14 LOPES, David, op. cit., p.28.

15 DALGADO, Sebastião Rodolfo, Glossário Luso-Asiático, 2 vols., Coimbra, Imprensa da Universidade, 1919 - For checking Indo-Portuguese words I owe much to this great dictionary.

16 VASCONCELLOS, Joaquim Leite de, Esquisses d'une Dialectologie Portugaise, Paris - Lisboa, 1901, pp. 179-181 - Specially for the dialect of Macao.

17 FEIJÓ, Madureira, Ortografia, 1734 [reprinted 1739] -From the borrowing of the statement in the text.

See: COELHO, F. Adolpho, Os Dialectos Romanicos ou Neo Latinos na Africa, Asia e-America, in "Boletim da Sociedade de Geographia de Lisboa", Lisboa, ser. 6, 1886, part. 3, p.722-The author notes the same value 'tch' for 'ch' in the Portuguese dialect of Singapore. Also see: ENTWISTLE, The Spanish Language, London, Faber & Faber, 1936, p.287; VASCONCELLOS, Joaquim Leite de, op. cit., p.62.

18 COELHO, F. Adolpho, 1886, op. cit., vol. 3, p.727.

19 COELHO, F. Adolpho, 1880, op. cit. - Where the author gives many examples of this. To give but one example he quotes a letter subscribed "vosso chacha" ("your grandmother").

20 Ibidem., p.168.

21 In the following list, the words in English, representing the Chinese headings, are added for convenience. Generally, no transcription of Chinese characters is given, but where it has not been possible to discover what Portuguese word is meant, a transcription in Guangdongonese pronounciation has been added.

22 Note lack of agreement between adjective and feminine noun: there are a number of such cases in the Vocabulary. Gomes writes the gramatically correct agreement in all such cases.

23 [爐] 'lo' [lu] is used in error here under the influence of its use in the other names of the months.

24 [Port:] ano is transcribed both by [晏奴] aan no [yannu], and, in the following entry, by [晏爐] aan lo [yanlu].

25 [羊] yeung is to be read as [美] mei [mei], or as [咩] me [mie].

26 Reading [士] sz [shi] for [士] t'o [tu].

27 [已] i [yi] is probably a mistake for [已] pa [ba].

See: TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.269 - [Luís Gonzaga] Gomes prints [以] [yi] for [已] [yi], and reconstructs (Port.:) "soalho", [English:] 'floor of a room'.

28 In this and the following three entries the words in parenthesis are not found in the original. The terms [Port.:] "abrir" and "fechar a porta" [respectively] refer to the official [English:] 'opening' and 'closing' of the Porta do Cerco by the Chinese.

29 'Hupu' is one of the few Indo-Portuguese words of Chinese origin to be found in this Vocabulary.

See: "cúli", and "faichi" [English: chopsticks] (though the latter is more probably related to Japanese [ ] haishi[zhu]).

30 See note 2 [sic] See: Note 22.

31 At this date [ 1954] the Ilha Verde (Green Island) is still an actual island. Aomen Tushuo says that there were many trees on it, and a pavilion and a park, and that it was used by the barbarians as a resort. There is an engraving of the park and pavilion in Aomen Jilue. Land reclamation has since joined the Green Island to the mainland of Macao.

32 TCHEONG-U-Lam [ZHANG Rulin]-IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.269 -[ Luís Gonzaga] Gomes writes [Port.:] "cidade", [English:] 'city'.

33 The word 'reinol' used in India to denote a 'European Portuguese', especially one recently arrived.

See: DALGADO, Sebastião Rodolfo, op. cit., vol. 2,p.253vo.

34 TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin]- IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.270 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] writes [Port.:] "ancião", probably a paraphrase.

35 This entry seems to be [Port.:] 'pai avo' [sic].

See: Idem. - [ Luís Gonzaga Gomes] is probably correct in ignoring the first character of the transcription and writing [Port.] "avô".

36 The characters [即是] [jishi] 'this is' have been included in the transcription in error.

37 According to Aomen Tushuo, the Chief of the barbarians was known as [兵頭] [bingtou] and was charged with the discipline of the Portuguese [其夷目曰兵頭主約束夷] [qi yimu yue bingtou zhu yueshu yi].

38 I do not understand the Chinese heading.

[See: TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iam [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., 1979, p.271 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] writes "cidadão ".

39 Idem.-[Luís Gonzaga Gomes] prints [肥] foi[fei] instead of [巴] pa [ba], which has lead him to make the reconstruction of [Port.:] "freire".

40 LJUNGSTEDT, Andrew, An Historical Sketch of the Portuguese Settlements in China; and of the Roman Catholic Church and Mission in China, By Sir Andrew Ljungstedt, Knight of the Swedish Order of Waza. A supplementary chapter, Description of the City of Canton, republished from the Chinese Repository, with the editor's permission, Boston,James Monroe & Co., 1836, p.36 - The author mention [Port.:] "cabeça de rua" as a "petty Chinese police officer".SAMPAIO, Manuel de Castro, Os Chins de Macau, Hong Kong, Typographia de Noronha e Filhos, 1867 - The author says that there were four "cabeças de rua" amongst the Chinese of Macao.

41 COELHO, F. Adolpho, 1886, op. cit.,, p.721 - [The author] gives the phrase "Fallá christão" as meaning [English:] 'to speak Portuguese', in the dialect of Singapore.

42 See note 2 [sic]. See: Note 22.

43 See note 2 [sic]. Idem.

Also see: TCHEONG-U-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] -IAN- Kuong-Iam[YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.272 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] paraphrases this entry as "boa pessoa".

44 COELHO, F. Adolpho, 1886 op. cit., p.721 - [The author] gives "cachorro" as the word used in Singapore for [Port.:] 'cão', [English:] 'dog'.

45 DALGADO, Sebastião Rodolfo, op. cit., vol. 2, p.27ro - [The author mentions it as] a large freshwater frog of which the legs are edible.

QUEIRÓZ, [?], Conquista de Ceilão, Colombo, 1911, p.484 - [The author mentions the word [Port.:]"manduco", apud DALGADO, Sebastião Rodolfo, op. cit.

QUEIROZ, [?], PEREIRA, Francisco, trans., Conquest of Ceylon, In the English version of Queiróz by Fr., Pereira (Colombo, 1930)p.596-[The translator cites "manduco"] as "bandicoot" or "pig-rat".

46 DALGADO, Sebastião Rodolfo, op. cit., vol. 1, p.275ro - [The author says that] "chipo, chipe", is the pearl oyster.

Ibidem., vol. 2, p.308vo - [The author says that] "siput, sipute ", is a shell or sheel fish in general; which Gomes writes here.

47 Ibidem., vol. 1, p.480ro - [The author says that] "jamboa"is the name used in Macao for the [Port.:] "toranja" or [English:] 'pomelo'.

QUEIROZ, [?], (1911), op. cit., p.54 - [The author also mentions] "jamboa". This occurrence shows that the word had a wider geographical distribution.

48 Correctly, 'the clove' [丁香] [dingxiang] is to be translated in Portuguese 'cravo, cravo da Índia'.

YULE, Henry - BURNELL, Arthur, Hobson-Jobson, being a Glossary of Anglo-Indian colloquial words and phrases, London, 1886 - Sub 'mace' says: "The fact that nutmeg and mace are the products of one and the same plant seems to have led to the fiction that clove and cinnamon also came from the same plant." This confusion seems to be reflected here; Portuguese 'canela' means [English:] 'cinnamon'.

49 This transcript may be an inexact rendering of Portuguese 'côsto '"[sic]; I cannot recognise any other word.

See: TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.274 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] has no solution.

50 Idem. - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] writes [Port.:] "tomate" [English: tomato], this is a paraphrase.

51 Idem. - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] writes [Port.:]"abóbora", [English:] 'gourd'. I have no explanation for the last two characters [見爾] [jianer] of this entry.

52 DALGADO, Sebastião Rodolfo, op. cit., vol. 2, p.39vo -[The author says that] "margão" is the name used in Macao for the [Latin:] Balsamina.

53 See note 2[sic]. See: Note 22.

54 DALGADO, Sebastião Rodolfo, op. cit., vol.2, p.477ro - [The author] says that "cancom " is the name used in Macao for [Latin]Iaponica aquatica, a vegetable much appreciated in Chinese and Macanese cooking.

55 I. e., [Port.:] "Figo da Índia", [English:]'banana'.

56 TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.275 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] suggests [Port.:] "incenso"; this is used below for [English:] "incense". Modern Portuguese for sulphur is 'enxôfre'.

57 [-n ] 'iu' [yao] is an error for [-A ] 'sha ' [shua]'.

58 TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iam [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.275 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] writes [Port.:] "breu", [English:] 'pitch', which is probably correct.

59 Idem. - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] [Port.:] "fio", [English:] 'thread'.

60 DALGADO, Sebastião Rodolfo, op. cit., vol.2, pp. 162vo- 163ro - [The author] says that "pano bajú"> and "panopaló" are two terms used in the Portuguese of Goa for women's dress. The latter expression appears as as "pano" simply. The usual [Portuguese] word for [English:] 'skirt' is 'saia'.

61 Ibidem. - This word does not occur in this work. Caia, in "Grande Enciclopédia Portuguesa e Brasileira", 37vols.+Apêndices+Actualização+Livro do Ano, Lisboa-Rio de Janeiro, Editorial Enciclopédia Limitada, [d.n.n.], vol. 5, p.405 - Mentions it being the same as "mosquiteiro", [English:] 'mosquito-net' in Macao.

LANIER, L., Étude Historique sur les Relations de la France et du Royaume de Siam de 1662 à 1703, Versailles, 1883, p. 110 - "Il fit déclarer que pendant quinze jours, tous seraient nourris et défrayés à ses dépens, et que chacun recevrait, au nom du roi, une caye ou rideau de mousseline propre à le garantir des insupportable piqûres des maringouins." 'Caia' must be a general Indo-Portuguese word rather than a native of Macao.

62 TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.275 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes writes Port.:] "saia", [English:] 'skirt'. I have no explanation for the word.

63 TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.276 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes suggests Port.:] "peça de pano?", [English:] 'piece of cloth'.

64 Idem. - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes respectivelly] paraphrases [Port.:] "chamelote holandês" and "chamelote inglês ". See: Ao Fan Pian, p.41 vo - According to [this work] this is a material for winter wear, and the following entry is a material for spring and summer wear. Also see: BRIDGMAN, E. C., A Chinese chrestomay in the Canton Dialect, Macao, S. Wells Williams, 1841, p.203 - Where these two Chinese terms are translated as "Dutch camlets" and "English camlets" respectively.

65 Probably a form of [Port.:] 'ceiar' [sic], [English:] 'to sup'.

66 [也] ya [ye] is an error for [地] tei [di].

67 Portuguese 'queijo', [English:] 'cheese'.

68 GONSALVES, Joaquim Afonso, Diccionario chinaportuguez no estilo vulgar mandarim e classico geral, Macau, Real Collegio de S. Jose, 1831; GONSALVES, Joaquim Afonso, Diccionario china-portuguez no estilo vulgar mandarim e classico geral, Macau, Real Collegio de S. Jose, 1833] - [The author] gives, sub "prate: muitos pratos", [English:] 'many sorts of dishes'.

See: TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong- Iam [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans:, op. cit., p.277 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes writes Port.:] "hortaliça", [English:]'greens'. I think Gomes is mistaken [...] here.

69 Idem. - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes's] paraphrases [Port.:] "canóculo".

70. Note the feminine form.VASCONCELLOS, Joaquim Leite de, op. cit., p. 180 - [The author observes] that in the dialect of Macao there is one form uao of the indefinite article.COELHO, F. Adolpho, 1886, op. cit., pp. 723-725 - [The author] writes "unga". The Chinese transcription reads ' ng', 'nga'.

71 TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.278 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] reads [孖士] ma sz [mashi], and reconstructs [Port.:] "maz", [English:]'mace', which is more likely

72 Reading [鍊] lin [lian] for [鎖] soh [suo].

73 TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iam[YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.278 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] paraphrase [Port.:] "braça ".

74 BRIDGMAN, E. C., op. cit., p.381 - "The ts 'ün [寸][cun] is called punt or punto in Canton [Guangdong]."DALGADO, Sebastião Rodolfo, op. cit. - [This author does not cite this word].

75 TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.278 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] paraphrases [Port.:] "estar de pé".

76 Ibidem., p.279 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] writes [Port.:] "consciência", [English:] 'conscience'.

77 This entry appears to be [Port.:]' recadár' or 'arrecadár' [sic] followed by another word which I cannot recognise.

78 TCHEONG-Ü-Lam [ZHANG Rulin] - IAN-Kuong-Iâm [YIN Guangren], GOMES, Luís Gonzaga, trans., op. cit., p.279 - [Luís Gonzaga Gomes] writes [Port.:] "muitas saudades ".
