A Summary of the main cultural activities during the quarter

APRIL

8th

DINNER-CONCERT in one of the Territory's hotels with music from the Razumowsky String Quartet. The four French musicians, trained at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris, played works by Dvorak, Haydn and Mozart. The concert was organized by the Macau branch of the Alliance Française with sponsorship from the Tourist Department.

10th

PORTUGUESE CINEMA in the D. Pedro V Theatre where José Álvaro Morais' film "O Bobo" was screened. The film is based on the work of Pessoa's homonym Alexandre Herculano and has already been shown at several international festivals. After the screening, there was a discussion between the film director and the audience. The event was organized by the Cultural Institute.

12-th-16th of June

COURSE in Theatre management held in the Macau Teachers' Association. The course was aimed at teachers and directors of theatre groups and was organized by the Cultural Institute.

16th-22nd

CHILDREN'S THEATRE in the Forum where the Chung Ying Theatre Group performed "Monster Man". The event was organized by the Cultural Institute and the Education Department.

23rd

THEATRE in the Macau Forum where the Chung Ying Theatre Group performed "A Risky Game". There were two performances, one for students and the other for the general public. The play deals with the issue of drug abuse amongst youngsters and had previously been performed in Hongkong where it had been supported by the Action Committee Against Narcotics. In Macau it was sponsored by the Cultural Institute and the Education Department.

24th

CONCERT given by the Macau Chamber Orchestra conducted by Doming Lam with guest performer Vivian Choi (piano), both from Hongkong. They played works by Rossini, Stravinsky, Mozart and Chopin in the Forum. The concert was organized by the Cultural Institute.

26th to 18th of May

EXHIBITION of "Contemporary Portuguese Ceramics" in the Temporary Exhibition Gallery of the Leal Senado. Forty three pieces by thirteen artists were displayed. This exhibition was part of a series of exhibitions of Portuguese ceramics and was followed by an exhibition of "19th Century Ceramics from Caldas da Rainha and 20th Century Miniatures" from the 23rd of March to the 20th of April. The exhibitions were organized by the Leal Senado and the Luís de Camões Museum.

30th of April and 1st of May

Concerts given by the Canton Choir in the Forum. This is a choral society which has been on the scene for over thirty years and has performed in several countries. The second performance was part of the May Day celebrations organized by Macau's Labour Organization. The choir sang works by Puccini, Mozart, Bach, Handel, He Luting and Xian Xinghai. Both concerts were organized by the Cultural Institute.

MAY

6th-13th

EXHIBITION of six tapestries by Maria do Rosário Melo in the Gallery of the Portuguese Bookshop. This artist has already held many individual exhibitions and participated in other joint exhibitions. Organized by the Cultural Institute.

14th and 15th

COMPETITION for Macau's Young Musicians. This was the sixth year the competition, with over forty different classes and an age range of fifteen to twenty five years old, had been held in the Sir Robert Ho Tung Cultural Centre. The competition was organized by the Cultural Institute.

22nd

CONCERT given by the Macau Chamber Orchestra conducted by Doming Lam with guest performers Warren Lee (piano), an exceptionally talented musician who was a child prodigy, and Christine Wong (violin) who is fourteen years old. They played works by Weber, Saint-Saens and Beethoven in the Macau Forum. The concert was organized by the Cultural Institute.

23rd to 7th June

EXHIBITION in the series of Contemporary Portuguese Photography. Photographs by Eduardo Nery, Manuel Magalhães and Helena Almeida. The exhibition was organized by the Leal Senado and the Luís de Camões Museum.

28th and 29th

DANCE in the D. Pedro V Theatre from the Cultural Institute's Dance Group directed by Cheong Son Seng. The group danced to music by Puccini, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Dvorak and some contemporary composers.

JUNE

5th

CONCERT given by the Macau Chinese Orchestra conducted by Wong Kin Wai with solos from Yu Kei Wai (gaohu and erhu) and Kun Hong Cheng (pipa and guzheng). They played works by modern Chinese composers. The concert was organized by the Cultural institute.

8th-26th

CELEBRATIONS of "Portugal Day", "Camões Day" and "Portuguese Communities Day". From the 8th to the 18th there was a photobibliographic exhibition of Fernando Pessoa in Macau's National Library to celebrate the cetenary of his birth. A bilingual (Chinese and Portuguese) catalogue was published and the films "The Anarchic Banker" and "The Keeper of Flocks" were screened. Jacinto Ramos gave a reading of Pessoa's works on the 8th. The Chinese translation was shown on a projector. There was a slide show of the life and works of Pessoa on the 8th and the 13th.

On the 9th, the folk group "Gavana" from Goa performed in the Forum. On the 10th, there was a procession to the Camões Grotto in Luís de Camões Park. From the 11 th to the 18th, the Portuguese Bookshop held an exhibition of drawings by Mário Miranda, an artist from Damão. The Portuguese Bookshop also held a conference in the same day titled "The Inheritance and Future of Lusophone Relations in the Four Continents" given by Selma de Vieira Velho, a specialist in Portuguese Language from Goa. On the 11th, there was a presentation of Portuguese music in the Forum given by the Janita Salomé Group. In the patio of the Forum there was a folk fair in which the folk group "Gavana", the Macau Portuguese Folk Group, the Tuna Macaense, the Salesian Singing and Dance Group and the Portuguese folk group "Caninha Verde". On the 13th, in the Largo do Senado, there was a performance from "Gavana" and the Salesian Singing and Dance Group. Also on the 13th, in the D. Pedro V Theatre, there was a poetry recital given by Jacinto Ramos. On the 14th, there was music in the form of a concert given by Talula Gama (piano), Tereza Figueiredo (cello) and Winston Colaço (violin) who played works by Chopin, Schubert, Sammartini, Braga Santos, Saint-Saens, Boccherini, Schumann, Bartok, Beethoven and Mozart. On the 26th, there was another concert in the Forum given by the Macau Chamber Orchestra conducted by Doming Lam with guest performer Ian Gaukroger (piano) playing works by Carvalho, Doming Lam, Beethoven, Shostakovich and also a piece of popular Portuguese music adapted by Mr, Lam. All of these events were organized by the Cultural Institute.

11th-15th

EXHIBITION of Modern Chinese painting in the Leal Senado. Fifty works by twenty five artists were on show. The exhibition was organized by the Macau branch of Amnesty International.

22nd

DANCE performance in Macau's cinema to mark the end of the academic year of the Cultural Institute's Dance Course. The performance was organized by the Cultural Institute.
