Liu, Sheng-Wen

Dr. Sheng-Wen Liu began her early music education in Taiwan, where she excelled on both cello and piano, winning numerous awards since her youth. She went on to study cello and piano performances at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, U. S. A., earning B.M. degrees for cello and piano, and later became the first Taiwanese cellist to receive a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Cello Performance from Peabody. Dr. Liu studied with the renowned American cellist Stephen Kates, the silver medalist of the 1966 Tchaikovsky Competition, for 10 years, and has given concerts throughout the U.S., including four consecutive concerto appearances with the San Francisco Civic Symphony with conductor Garret Gerritsen.

Dr. Liu is currently on the faculty of the National Taiwan University of the Arts, She also serves as a columnist for the MUZIK magazine, Music Director of Mysterium Musicum, a vocal ensemble that strives to revive the glory of the sacred music, and the Principal Cello of the YinQi Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. With an enthusiasm for new music, she has commissioned and premiered many works for cello and chamber music. Apart from her busy teaching and concert schedule, she was the founding Director of The Taiwan Society of Healthy Performance Technique Promotion, where she continues to promote a healthier environment for music education in Taiwan.
