Miao, Xiaozheng

A graduate from SCOM, Mou Xiaozheng is a national first class pipa performer, principal pipa of the Guangdong National Orchestra of China, director of the Pipa Committee of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society, and a council member of the Pipa Division of the Chinese Musicians Association.
An active performer, Mou Xiaozheng has toured Germany, Switzerland, Vienna, Poland, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Macao. In 2002, she held Mou Xiaozheng – Pipa Solo Recital at the Xinghai Concert Hall, later complemented by the event’s CD and VCD; that same year, she also held Li Shui Bi Yu, a concert featuring solo and ensemble pieces at the Xinghai Concert Hall, where she held the Pipa recital Confluences of Rivers in 2010 and Pipa Melodies and Blossoms, a concert featuring solo and ensemble pieces, in 2012. She has released albums like Pipa Techniques, a VCD of teaching materials published by Pacific Audio & Video Co. in 2001, and Pipa solo albums like Hungry Horses Ringing Bells, Twelve Ladies in the Red Chamber, Colours of Sound, India Pipa, The First Element, Essence of Sound, Pipa Pieces by Wang Huiran, and Pipa – Green Notes – and ensemble albums like Rouge Hot, Good Virtuous, and Five Elements. She has received several Outstanding Musician Awards from the Guangdong Musician Association.
With a consummate technique, her interpretations show mellifluous tones, in pursuit of the beauty of simplicity, with a balanced fusion of firmness and flexibility. Her playing is rich in musical contours, oozing a strong artistic appeal. As such, she is widely emulated by today’s young Pipa performers.
