The 22nd Macao Youth Music Competition (MYMC) has successfully finalized on May 9, and winners of the remaining categories were announced.

The Violin Solo Group B (Intermediate level) competition was held in the Auditorium of Macao Polytechnic Institute. In this competition, all contestants had to play Kreisler’s Minuet and Schubert’s Bee and one piece of their own choice. Lam Sut Leng and Raimundo Chung both won the first prize with 89 points; Lio Weng Chong won the second prize. There was no third prize winner. For the Violin Solo Group C (Advanced level) competition, Hong Iat U won the first prize with a high score of 92 points, and the second and third prizes were awarded to Ho Ieong Cheng and Lou Cheong Tat respectively. In a discussion after the competition, the judges revealed that the candidates were well prepared and their overall level was high. The only setback was that they lacked experience but there are always room for improvements.

The Baritone Solo Group A (Beginner level) and Group C (Advanced level) competitions were held in the Auditorium of the Macao Museum. Lai Fong Man won the third prize with 85 points. No first or second prize was given because no candidates could reach the standard level. Un Ion Sam won the first prize in Group C with 87 points; Ng Chi Fan won the second prize. No third prize was given.

The Clarinet Solo Group A (Beginner level) and Group C (Advanced level) competitions were held in the Small Auditorium of the Macao Cultural Centre. Cheong Sio Pang won the first prize in the Group A competition with 91 points; Ip U Ieong won the second prize; Choi Hou Lam and Kam Chon Wai both won the third prize. For Group C, Tang Hoi Lon and Lai Ka Meng both won the first prize with 88 points; Cheng Kwan Chi and Leong Io won the second and third prize respectively.

In the Guzheng Solo Group A (Beginner level) competition, Tam Kei Iong won the first prize with a high score of 92 points while Wong Hio Meng won the second prize with only two points difference. Hoi Cheok Teng and Cheong Sut Ieng both won a third prize. Wong Hio Cheng won the first prize in Group B (Intermediate level) while Gung Si Hang won the second prize.

The atmosphere was more intense in Group C (Advanced level) competition. Leong Tek Ka, dressed in traditional Chinese costumes, won a high score of 94 points with her skilful performance. Wong Choi Si won the second prize and Tang Chong Ian won the third prize. Chan Hong Nam, the only male contestant in the Guzheng competition, won much applause from the audience and was awarded a certificate of competence.

The Saxophone Solo Group A (Beginner level) and Group C (Advanced level) competition were held in the Auditorium of the Macao Museum. Out of 18 contestants, Choi Hou Lam won the first prize with one point difference to the second prize winner, Chan Ieng Ieng. Chan Mei Kun won the third prize. In the Group C competition, Loi Hon Cheong won the first prize with 94 points, one point higher than the second prize winner U Ion Nam. Cheong Chon Lam and Tiago Luis Chan, both with a high score of 91 points, won the third prize.

The contestants in the French Horn Solo competition were less competitive. No candidates won the first prize in Group A (Beginner level) competition. Chan Hio Ian won the second prize and Che Iok Teng won the third prize. There were also no first prize nor second prize winners in Group C (Advanced level) competition. The third prize was awarded to Si Wai Tat.

Percussion Solo Group A and Group C was the last competition in MYMC. All contestants did their best to compete for awards in the competition. In Group A (Beginner level), Lou Cheok Lam won the first prize with 92 points; Ng Mei Teng and Lou Sao San won the second and third prizes respectively with good scores of 90 and 88 points. Contestants in Group C (Advanced level) also gave good performances. Vong Wai Man won the first prize with a high score 93 points. There were two winners for the second prize. They were Cheong Hoi Chan and Chan Hok Meng with 90 points. The third prize was awarded to Leong Io Chong with 88 points.

The above winners will be able to perform in the “Concert of the Winners” which will take place at 20:00 on May 23 in the Auditorium of the Macao Polytechnic Institute. The Cultural Institute will also invite some of the outstanding winners of the last and present MYMC to perform with famous cellist Qin Liwei in the “Flourishing Art” Concert, which will be held in the Grand Auditorium of the Macao Cultural Centre at 20:00 on May 29.
