The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Liaoning Province to celebrate Macao’s return to the People’s Republic of China. Renowned carving masters carved the piece out of serpentine jade, also named ‘Xiu Jade’ after its place of origin, the Xiuyan County of the province. The smooth, delicate but firm texture of the jade makes it the best choice for jade carving.

The work is carved out of serpentine jade with green inlayer. On the triangular jade ornament, nine lifelike lions are playing joyfully, accompanied by nine blooming lotuses and a rabbit under the moon in the background, providing a sense of harmony and reunion both in the sky and on earth. It is an expression of the joy of the Liaoning people and the rest of the Chinese nationalities towards Macao’s return in the Year of Rabbit.
