Wool Tapestry – Prosperous Hong Kong

Length: 5.5 m  Width: 1.8 m

The gift was presented by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland. This handmade tapestry is woven from over 3 million strips of wool in more than 100 colours.

As the shinning pearl in the South Sea of China, Hong Kong is famous for its integration of Eastern and Western cultures, as well as its energetic and prosperous livelihood. The graphic design on the tapestry illustrates the coastline scenery of Hong Kong Island. The building stretching across the lower left is the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, while the Central Plaza, the tallest building in Hong Kong at the time, stands behind. On the right of the tapestry is the Bank of China Building designed by the world-famous Chinese architect Ieoh Ming Pei. This coastal area is the most prosperous commercial centre in Hong Kong and also the most attractive part of the city.

As the Special Administrative Region of Macao was officially established, the Hong Kong SAR had already successfully implemented the policy of ‘one country, two systems’. The Hong Kong SAR government presents this tapestry on Macao with the hope that Macao can create an even brighter and more prosperous future upon its return, and that the two SARs will develop hand in hand.
