The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland. The tapestry is vibrant and lively, portraying the scenery of Kanas Lake. Based on the painting ‘Scenery of Kanas Lake’ created by Sun Liming, the painting delicately depicts the beautiful autumn scenery of the lake, featuring the soaring snowy mountains, crystal clear water and grazing horses. 

Kanas Lake is the most famous landscape in the Xinjiang region, which lies in the Altay Mountains. ‘Kanas’ means beautiful, affluent and mysterious in the Mongolian language. The towering snowy peaks, lush forests, dark green lakes and blue sky compose a heavenly scene. 

Mr. Sun’s painting has been successfully reproduced on this traditional Xinjiang tapestry as a gift in celebration of Macao’s return. The texture and thickness of the wool enhance this work. The beautiful scenery is achieved on the tapestry by using bright colours and harmonic hues. The work signifies the social and economic developments in Xinjiang, while expressing the love of the Xinjiang people for the motherland and the celebration of Macao’s return.
