Stone Carving – Nine Sheep Welcoming the Phoenix

Length: 0.9 m  Width: 0.36 m  Height: 0.83 m

The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland. This low-relief carving is made of Helan stone which is only found in the region. Helan stone has a delicate and firm texture, mainly dark purple or pea green in colour. Some stones feature natural patterns resembling drifting clouds and flowing rivers.

The edge of the piece is carved with  Chinese wolfberry, symbolising longevity. A large bharal (a sheep) of Helan Mountain, which is a National Second-Class Protected Animal, is carved on the right at the bottom of the stone. Eight smaller bharals portray a tranquil, pleasant landscape surround the large bharal. On the left is a phoenix looking back and coiling its tail, surrounded by the Chinese characters ‘feng’ (meaning ‘phoenix’), signifying Macao’s return.

The work incorporates classic style and primitive sense to represent the close relationship between Ningxia and Macao, expressing the region’s good wishes for Macao’s return.
