The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Qinghai Province to celebrate Macao’s return to the People’s Republic of China. It is carved out of yellowish jade from Kunlun Mountains. The Kunlun Mountains are carved in a structured and stylised manner, with the soaring peaks representing the strong and firm character of the Chinese people.
The Qinghai Province is also known as Rivers Source, meaning that it is the origin of the Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers. On the sculpture, two large dragons spiral around the mountain and pour out water from their mouths, symbolising the two rivers’ origins in the Qinghai, flowing down from the plateau and cultivating the country throughout its 5000-year history.
On the base, the chrysanthemum, bamboo, plum blossom, orchid, peach, pomegranate, persimmon and chayote are carved, symbolising the peaceful and happy lives of the people, as well as the prosperity and bright future of the motherland.
