Cast Copper Sculpture-Ba Ji Yuan He (Wishes of Peace and Goodwill)

The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Shaanxi Province to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland. The outer surface of the cast copper sculpture is gold-foiled. Thin gold foils are glued by using lacquer to the surface of the work for decoration, and such technique of handicraft has had a long history.

The name ‘Ba Ji Yuan He’ has a profound significance. In Chinese ‘Ba Ji’ means ‘all dimensions’ and is used to represent the territory. ‘Yuan’ indicates ‘the return’, while ‘He’ means ‘peace’. The famous eight sceneries of Chang’an are embossed on the petals of the blooming lotus, symbolising Shaanxi’s sincere blessing to Macao. The eight sceneries are of Hand-Shaped Cliff of the Mount Hua, Sunset at Li Mountain, Grand View of the Ba Bridge, Drinking Wine by the Qujiang Pond, Yan Bell Tower, Sailing on Wei River, Caotang Temple in the Mist, and Snow on Mount Taibai.
