Tapestry – Soaring Mountain and Affluent Water

Length: 2.58 m  Width: 1.65 m

The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Tibet Autonomous Region to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland. This tapestry, in form of a scroll, is bright, sprightly, and visually extensive. Using the traditional carpet techniques of the Tibetan people, it is a fine example of Tibetan artwork.

Tibetan carpets are made of local wools and coloured by dyes extracted from plants and minerals. The assorted bright colours on the carpets reflect the vigorous and optimistic characters of the Tibetan people.

On the tapestry, the Potala, the Buddhist Holy Land, is supported by the auspicious clouds, while the rainbow acts as a bridge linking Tibet and Macao. White cranes fly over the bridge, carrying messages of celebration and best wishes from the ethnic groups in Tibet. The sprays and clouds symbolise the joy of Tibet and other Chinese ethnic groups for Macao’s return to Chinese sovereignty.
