Cast Bronze Art – Drum of Joy

Length: 1.28 m  Width: 0.9 m  Height: 1.85 m

The gift, presented by the People’s Government of Guizhou Province to celebrate Macao’s return to the People’s Republic of China, is made of copper with inlaid precious stones. The main part of the work is a copper drum raised by four groups of supports in the shape of phoenixes and dragon-turtles (a Chinese legendary creature). Drums are the most important musical and ceremonial instruments amongst the Guizhou minorities, thus they were a symbol of power in ancient times and now convey the meaning of unity.

The images of Guizhou people dancing and singing are carved on the front of the drum, celebrating Macao’s return. On the body of the drum, there are 36 dragons and 72 fish amongst other auspicious patterns, while the piece is also decorated with small bells hung by chains, all of which represent local features. The inlaid with rubies and green crystals in the eyes of phoenixes and the dragon-turtles bring vividness and solemnity to the creatures. This grand work represents the synergy between Chinese mainland and Macao which successfully led to reunification.
