The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Sichuan Province to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland. The work is a large embroidered Shu screen. Shu embroidery, also known as Chuan embroidery, is one of the four famous categories of Chinese embroidery, along with Su embroidery, Xiang embroidery and Yue embroidery. Shu embroidery, a famous traditional handicraft of Sichuan, is made out of soft brocade and colourful silk. It combines delicate stitching, elegant colours, smooth lines and the charm of Chinese ink painting.
The embroidery on this work is done in silk, delicately combining the images of Jiuzhaigou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sichuan province, and the nationally treasured pandas in the design. The heaven-like scenery in Jiuzhaigou, along with the pandas, plum blossoms and bamboos in the surroundings, express the unity and the strength of the Chinese nationalities and their motherland.
