Sculpture – Centuries of the Yangtze River

Length: 1.65 m  Width: 0.7 m  Height: 1.999 m

The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Chongqing Municipality to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland. The sculpture is composed of nine golden birds, a piece of Three Gorges stone and a wooden base. The stone is named after its place of origin, the Three Gorges. The Yangtze River erodes the rocks against the coast of the Three Gorges, shaping them into different forms. Three Gorges stones are mainly in black, white, grey or a yellowish brown colour. The natural shape and unique grain of the stones make them extremely precious. As a Chinese saying goes, ‘It is easier to get thousands of grams of gold than one piece of Three Gorges stone’. This work is mainly made of Three Gorges stone to emphasise the meaning of overcoming difficulties. The work is 1.999 metres in height with the nine golden birds standing in the wind, representing the handover and reunion.

The wooden base features an octahedral design. Each facet of the base is painted with auspicious patterns that convey the good wishes from Chongqing towards Macao’s return to the motherland. The base is carved with 99 clouds, whose shapes are derived from  the numbers ‘1999’, along with the emblematic flower of Chongqing, the camellia . Inside the hollow base, there is a piece of silk signed by the participants of the official Macao handover celebration activity, adding historic significance to the piece.
