Crystal and Jade Carving-Nation of One Mind

Length: 1.22 m  Width: 1.22 m  Height: 1.999 m

The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province to celebrate Macao’s return to the People’s Republic of China. It consists of a jade ball, a crystal lotus and a diamond-shape base. The jade ball is carved from Nan jade from the province, which is known for its translucent green colour, gloss and graceful texture. The lotus and the diamond-shaped base are both made of crystal.

The jade ball is adorned with nine holes on its surface, representing the reunion and the handover of Macao. The ball also features blooming kapoks and lotuses, symbolising the prosperity of Guangdong and Macao. Beneath the ball is a huge crystal lotus, conveying goodwill to Macao. The design of the lotus, which holds up the ball, also represents an auspicious saying of ‘blooming flower under a full moon’ that signifies the Macao people’s hard work in building a bright future. The diamond-shaped base, made of crystal with 56 sections, represents the 56 Chinese nationalities and express the region’s wishes for an even brighter future to Macao.

The gift is 1,999 millimetres high and 1,220 millimetres wide, representing the date when China resumed its sovereignty over Macao and the special administrative region was established. The diameter of the jade ball is 888 millimetres, meaning ‘good fortune and wealthy future’ in colloquial Cantonese.
