Jade Carving – Sundial with Nine Dragons

Length: 1.99 m  Width: 1.1 m  Height: 0.8 m

The gift was presented by the People’s Government of Henan Province to celebrate Macao’s return to the People’s Republic of China. It is carved from a single piece of high-quality Dushan jade. The jade derives its name from its place of origin, Dushan, which is located nine kilometres north of Nanyang city. Dushan jade, together with Hetian jade, Xiu jade and turquoise, is one of the four famous jades found in China. It has earned a reputation as the ‘Jade of Henan’ for its firm, smooth texture and its motley and assorted colours. The gift was carved from an 800-kilogram piece of Dushan jade, utilising techniques such as relief, openwork and engraving.

The main feature of this work is the nine dragons flying around a sundial. ‘Sundial’ and ‘Return’ are homonyms in Chinese. Dragons are symbols of the Chinese nationalities, representing the nation’s motivated and hard-working spirit. The nine dragons surrounding the sundial also evoke a sense of reunion. This gift expresses the good wishes of the people of Henan for Macao’s return to Chinese sovereignty.
