Sculpture – Blooming Flowers and Harvest Moon

Length: 0.86 m Width: 0.4 m Length: 1.94 m

The gift, presented by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province to celebrate Macao’s return to the People’s Republic of China, is crafted from sandalwood, padauk, jade and other precious materials. As two kinds of rare woods, sandalwood is renowned of its unique fragrance, and padauk for its exceptional colour.

This work is composed of a palace fan supported by a padauk base carved with designs of ganoderma (lingzhi). The fan is made of sandalwood, padauk and jade. At the centre of the fan is a rotatable bouquet ball carved with peonies, plum flowers and lotuses, representing the People’s Republic of China, the Jiangsu Province and Macao SAR respectively. The handle of the fan is delicately carved to depict blooming peonies and plum flowers. Attached to the end of the handle by a jade chain are two sandalwood bouquets and a chime-shaped percussion instrument.

This work is delicate in design. The blooming flowers and the full-moon-like bouquet convey the celebration of the 70 million Jiangsu people at Macao’s return to Chinese sovereignty.
