Korea, deeply rooted in agricultural traditions for over 5000 years, has always closely followed nature’s rhythm. Their lives and cultures have been sustained through the four seasons – spring, summer, autumn, winter – and guided by the 24 solar phases of the lunar calendar. Living in harmony with nature, Koreans historically prayed to the gods of heaven, earth, mountains, water, and trees, seeking peace, prosperity, and safety, particularly given that the country is surrounded by sea on three sides.
These beliefs have led to the development of numerous Kut rituals, shamanistic ceremonies recognised today for their cultural value.
Inspired by this rich artistic and spiritual heritage, The Drum Shaman incorporates the essence of Korean culture into a modern percussion display. The drum, traditionally an instrument of healers, resonates powerfully on stage, symbolising both the divine and the earthly, along with the elements of nature. Experience the divine rhythms that bring ancient Korean culture to life!
1. Seojang
A procession heads to a sacred place to welcome and greet the gods. The tradition to welcome the deities is a characteristic feature of these rites in a beautiful parade where each performer highlights their presence, characterised by the merging of drum sounds and human charm. This ritual purifies the body and mind before offering sacrifices to the gods.
2. Cheongsingo
The drum of the Earth shakes the axis of the world, awakening its energy. The heavenly beater receives this energy and spreads it in all directions. The cadence of Heaven connects it with the Earth, invoking the gods. Both beats unite to create harmony, interacting and ascending, symbolising the planet’s geothermal energy of reaching the sky.
3. Lunar New Year’s Play
Through the captivating rhythms of a Janggu performance in the Hwimori style, the shaman connects with the audience, evoking laughter with unique melodies and witty expressions. Drawing inspiration from Honam Nongak, an old farmers' music, it incorporates the lively Muak style. It brings forth a festive atmosphere reminiscent of Lunar New Year celebrations, blending tradition with entertainment.
4. Jigo
Delve into the profound connection between humanity and nature in this evocative chapter. Since ancient times, Korea has held the custom of cultivating the land, laying the very foundation of life. Building a house began with breaking the ground, much like farming started with ploughing, as both are essential acts that have sustained human existence.
The resonant sounds of drums played upon the earth echo the heartbeat of Koreans labouring and nurturing the land. Their supreme pounding captures an ancestral spirit, awakening the earth with rhythms that verge on divine energy. The performance channels the sound of life itself, tilling the soil and invoking the sacred forces that dwell within.
Experience a powerful tribute to the timeless bond between people and earth, as the drumming awakens not just the ground beneath our feet but the spirit that connects us all.
5. Hongo
The Hongo calls the spirit of the drum. Through graceful movements, a performer dances atop the instrument, conveying a deep connection, symbolising the unity of body and sound. This scene delivers emotional and spiritual healing to the audience.
6. Ulbuk Sanjo
The haunting sound of the Ulbuk, the drum that Jeju Island sailors once played to soothe wandering souls during sea journeys, fills the air. This interplay between the living and the spirits creates a poignant, yet lighthearted moment, reflecting the sailors’ efforts to comfort the spirits they encountered.
7. Cheongaego
Binari, a ritual chant, is heard, praying to the Heavens through dance. Five performers, symbolising the gods of the five directions, spread out in a powerful display of movement and sound. This ritual mirrors the ancient prayers of our ancestors, who once sought for the sky to open and rain to fall.
8. Resolution
Beginning with the powerful sounds of four drums, this vignette symbolises the elements of heaven, earth, water, and fire. As terrestrial and heavenly rhythms are exchanged, a small gong makes its appearance, adding a sharp, vibrant energy. The performers reach the peak of their spiritual demonstration while praying for harmony and coexistence. This is a call for the flourishing of goodness and unity among all things.
