Born in Shenyang, Yu learnt to play the piano and harp when she was six under the tutelage of Yue Pingqiu. She earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, and an Artist Diploma from the Indiana University Bloomington.
After winning the Gold Medal in the 2001 USA International Harp Competition, she gave concerts regularly in the United States, Europe and Asia, and was invited to give lectures. She was an adjudicator of the USA International Harp Competition, Nippon Harp Competition and Hong Kong International Harp Competition, as well as the co-chair of the Host Committee for the 13th World Harp Congress held in Hong Kong in 2017. Currently she is the music director of the Hong Kong Harp Chamber and a harp instructor at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Some of her students have won prizes in international and national harp competitions.
