Chen earned the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master’s degree from DePaul University, Chicago. He currently teaches double bass at the Central Conservatory of Music and performs as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral double bassist around the world. He has rich teaching experiences, many of his students were granted scholarships to study at music conservatories in the United States or joined professional symphony orchestras. He has taught in Chicago Bass Festival, Biarritz International Bass Academy, Lan Yang International Double Bass Summer Camp etc.

Apart from performing Western classical works, Chen has worked with different composers and premiered their new pieces. In 2019, he recorded an album of Franck and Debussy’s sonatas.
