Preface

George Edward Moore, the pioneer of analytical philosophy, deemed that since “beauty” is not a natural object, it is unable to define it using the methods as in natural sciences but can only be grasped by intuition. Entitled Florescence – Paintings by Xu Yan Ting, the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau has the pleasure to display more than 40 recent paintings of Xu Yanting. The collection included paintings of plum blossoms in deep winter, cannas at their charm and beauty, sunflowers in full bloom, and peonies in splendid elegance. The smooth lines and bright colours of these paintings should give visitors the intuition of “beauty”.

Xu said that it is not skills but the experience from heart that can tame the powers between colours and lines. This is no different from the opinion of the German Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix, who said that the expression of feelings should be given priority even when one is practising painting. Although the painting objects are flowers, Xu expresses well the fullness of life. Under her paintbrush, the magnificent colours fuse with her passion for life. Such feeling is like the fragrance of flowers that greet visitors, making us not only mentally refreshing, but also exclaim the full and wonderful experience this painter possesses in her heart.

“Human and Nature” has become the consistent theme of Xu’s paintings. She used to say that the Florescence exhibition represents the different moments of life, be they bright or gloomy. After touring in such cities as Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong; as well as in the United States, France, Japan and Singapore, the exhibition has now come to Macao. I invite you to join me to feel with calm the florescence of the art career of Xu Yanting.
