Known as the “Capital of Oriental Arts and Crafts”, China’s Jiangsu Province
is famed for its skilled artisans. The folk art of Jiangsu, distinguished by its
long history, diversity and technique, is a testament to the charm of the region
and to the endless wisdom of its people.
From late August, Lou Kau Mansion will host a series of demonstrations on the
superlative folk arts from Jiangsu Province inscribed on the National or
Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage List. These include both Suzhou
embroidery (one of the “Four Famous Embroideries” of China) and Wuxi embroidery,
as well as the practical and beautiful sandalwood fans, combs from Changzhou,
perfumed sachets from Xuzhou, the famous clay figures from Huishan in Wuxi
Province, cloth sculpture, liuqing bamboo carving, fine stone and seed carvings
from Suzhou, ivory and bamboo carving from Yangzhou and artisanal gold and
silver craft items, all of them conveying the cultural essence of various
regions of Jiangsu.
