The Main Cultural Activities over the Quarter

JULY

3rd

The first meeting of the second session of discussions on "Culture in Macau" took place. Over a hundred representatives from the main cultural institutions and associations in the territory met to discuss their problems and needs, and to offer some opinions and suggestions from the Chinese community in Macau regarding cultural policies in Macau.

4th

Season of French films by Bertrand Tavernier organized by ICM in collaboration with the Alliance Française and the French Consulate in Hong Kong. Five films by this highly successful French director were shown from the 4th to the 8th.

7th

Charles Boxer gave an extremely lively talk on voyages between Macau and Japan to a large crowd which included some of the foremost figures in Macau. Boxer was invited to Macau by the Navy to attend the celebrations of Navy Day. He signed copies of two of his books which had been reprinted especially for this occasion in a joint effort by ICM and the Macau Centre for Maritime Studies: Ásia Sínica e Japónica by José de Jesus Maria with notes by C. Boxer, and The Great Ship from Amacon by Boxer.

8th

The subject of Makista creole, or patois, was discussed in the conference room of Macau's Mint in an initiative undertaken by ICM. There was a lively debate with a lot of participation by members of the audience which included some prominent local figures such as Father Benjamim Videira Pires, Dr. Graciete Batalha, Dr. Beatriz Basto da Silva, Dr. Henrique de Senna Fernandes and also Dr. Isabel Tomás, a researcher of patois currently holding an ICM scholarship.

8th

Fernando Pessoa was the subject of a Commemorative Exhibition of photographs and over three hundred books in the National Library celebrating the first centenary of the poet's birth. A catalogue was produced in Portuguese and English in an attempt to introduce Portuguese culture to Macau's Chinese community. An Anthology of poetry by Fernando Pessoa was also published in Portuguese and Chinese. Special guest, actor Jacinto Ramos, recited some poems by Pessoa in one of the rooms in the library. Two films and a slide show depicting Pessoa's life and work were also shown.

15th

Modern Portuguese photography was the theme of an exhibition in the Leal Senado organized by the Luís de Camões Museum and the Leal Senado. Work by some of the best modern photographers seen in Portugal over the past few years: Helen Almeida, Manuel Magalhães, Jorge Molder, Eduardo Nery, Cruz Filipe and Gerard Castello Lopes.

17th

3rd Portuguese Language and Culture Summer Course for students studying Portuguese as a foreign language. As in former years, the course took place in the University of East Asia, and finished on the 13th of August.

21st

Concert by the "Petits Chanteurs de l'Opéra de Paris" in the Cathedral. The concert was organized by the Alliance Française and subsidised by ICM. The hour and a half-long concert included pieces by Mozart, Bach and Bouzinac.

24th

Concert of Chinese music in Forum II given by students of the Chinese Musical Instruments Course 1987/88 taught by Wong Kin Wai, Ying Man Ming and Tsui Ming Fat.

31st

Concert by the Macau Chamber Orchestra. This was the last in the first season of concerts to be given by the MCO with a programme full of popular themes from film scores. In the pieces by Bach and Katchaturian, the orchestra was assisted by the young percussionist from Hong Kong, Lau Man Ha.

AUGUST

5th

The Leal Senado was the setting for an exhibition of photographs by Walter Poon, a well-known photographer from Hong Kong, organized by ICM and the Leal Senado.

6th and 7th

A Chinese version of Waiting for Godot was performed in the Teatro D. Pedro V, organized by ICM. This was the end result of a course in theatre direction organized by ICM to which Mr. Wang Gui from the Beijing Dramatics Association was invited.

7th

Concert in Forum II given by the Macau Chinese Orchestra with guest appearances from well-known Chinese musicians Yim Hok Man (Singapore) and Li Tak Kong (Hong Kong).

13th

Closing ceremony of the Portuguese Language and Culture Course in the Teatro D. Pedro V with a show put on by the students.

17th

Buñel's film "Diary of a Maid" was shown in the Sir Robet Ho Tung Cultural Centre, organized by the French Institute.

19th

Concert given by the Gerald Danovitch Saxophone Quartet in Forum II. The famous Canadian quartet played both classical and jazz music going from Bach and Rossini to Gershwin and Scott Joplin.

26th

ICM displayed its publications in the "10th International Biennial Book Fair" in front of the Ruins of St. Paul's from the 26th of August to the 3rd of September.

SEPTEMBER

3rd

Exhibition of Chinese paintings by artists Lok Tai Tang, Wong Wai Kuan and Wong Kin Yee, organized by ICM.

5th

Sculptures by João Cutileiro were on show in the Leal Senado in an exhibition organized by the Luís de Camões Museum. Cutileiro is considered to be the best Portuguese sculptor of our times.

6th

The Camões Quartet performed once more in the Sir Robert Ho Tung cultural Centre playing pieces by Pedro Araújo, Bach, Mozart and Simão Barreto.

The quartet was formed at the beginning of 1987 and is composed of four Macau musicians: Che Loi Chong (1st violin), Che Wai Lam (2nd violin), Simão Barreto (viola) and Kenneth Ingerson (cello). The concert was organized by ICM.

22nd

Exhibition of paintings by Nuno da Cunha in the Leal Senado.

23rd

Exhibition of "Stories and Legends" in the Portuguese Bookshop organized by ICM. This was primarily an exhibition of graphics, books and illustrations connected to the publication of six children's books written by Alice Vieira with themes based on Macau. The authoress was present on this occasion as were the artists responsible for the illustrations, Evelyn Poon and Lok Tai Tong.

24th

The play Yesterday's Child by Hong Kong playwright Tou Kuok Wai was put on by the High Noon Production Co. Ltd. Theatre group in the Teatro D. Pedro V.

25th

Concert given by the Macau Chamber Orchestra in Macau's Cinema. This was the start of the second season this year with works by Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Mozart's 5th Concerto with soloist Qie Lu Zhong.

28th

Piano recital by Sequeira de Costa in Forum Ⅱ. The famous Portuguese pianist played works by Beethoven, Bach, Busoni, Chopin, Vianna da Mota and Albeniz to a huge audience.
